As with any progressive format, like film, pans should be done slowly. You will learn the right speed with practice. Your shutter speed will also have an impact. If there is a subject in your pan, say a surfer, pan with the subject on high speed pans. I would recommend a Pola and lots of ND filters while shooting waves in sunny Hawaii. Or the dual Pola variable ND trick.

Can I regain audio control with pre-amp (DXA-8)

Can I regain some or any audio control with my hd10u by using a device such as beachtek's DXA-8 which has a pre-amp, gain, and other controls, or will auto functions in the camera simply cancel out my efforts. And if so, then is there any way to regain in-camera audio control. I figured enough time have passed so that if there is a way someone would have figured it out by now.

Quality

I own a Jvc Jyhd10 and a Canon Xl2....My cousin who dabbles in film making came up from Pittsburgh. He owns an ag-dvx100a. We did a shoot together and I think he was very very impressed with the results from the JVC. Now I'm not gonna say that the dvx100a isn't a great camera because it is. However at the end of the day when we started comparing Raw footage on a 28 television the Jvc definately held it's own and many there said the picture was better. Having said that I find that the Jvc is not an easy camera to work with, but if you take your time you can get great results. I do love XL2 as well :).

"I find that the Jvc is not an easy camera to work with, but if you take your time you can get great results"

That is the "cam" in a nutshell!

"Flight of the Phoenix"

Hey, I think they used the HD10 on the extras to the movie "Flight of the Phoenix". Check it out - during one of the shots that horrible green light shows on the footage. I'm pretty sure it's the HD10 or the GR1.

Chris Hurd April 17th, 2005 06:11 PM

Cool... although I haven't seen this movie yet, just out of spite, because I'm such a huge fan of the original version by Robert Aldritch.

lens adapter sizes- 52mm, 58mm + 72mm

Never having screwed one on, I feel quite naive about lens adapters. If memory serves--for one reason or another--both 52mm and 58mm lens adapters work with the GR-* cams.

I want to buy not rent an wide-angle adapter, but I'm using an XL-1, which is 72mm (so I'm told). (The idea is to get an adapter I can use for both, if possible.) I called up the store and the man said a 72mm adapter could never work with a GR-*, and a 52/58mm could never work with an XL-1.

Is this correct?

Steve Watnet April 22nd, 2005 10:50 AM

ok thanks for all the help folks

and the answer is:

get a 58mm converter and then step up in the case of the canon and step down in the case of the HD1

Service from local dealer top notch

In June of 2003 I bought an HD10 from Industrial Video in the Cleveland, Ohio area. As I recall, I paid a couple hundred bucks over the B&H price at the time, but the camera was brand new then. I was able to play with the camera, pay my money, and walk out the door with it.

Recently, a white pixel started showing up intermittently, and I took it to the dealer on March 28th. A week or so later, I had an estimate, and I had the camera back on April 22nd. The camera was sent to JVC, and the dealer double-checked to see that the repair was done properly. They were always responsive and cooperative.

The bill was $181, and I am now pursuing the one year extended warranty because the camera was purchased on Master Card. I must provide paperwork to MC, and I should get reimbursed. We'll see!

So many companies are hard to deal with. Industrial Video is definitely an exception!

Heath McKnight April 23rd, 2005 09:57 AM

I go with a local dealer, too. I bought the extended warranty, so I should be good to go.

GR-HD1 Playback Problem

I recently bought this camcorder and am pretty satisfied with the
results. I shot one mini-DV tape in HD. It played back nicely on my
HDTV. The next day when I wanted to play it again, it wouldn't. Once it
said "Cannot decode audio or video". When I fast forwarded the tape I
could see the pictures, but it did not play. However, a newly shot tape
played back without any problem.

Then it happened to another tape on which I had recorded a few minutes
of experimental video. Trying to narrow down the problem I discovered
that when I stop the tape in the middle, take it out, and then put it
back, the tape somehow gets corrupted and does not play anymore.
Sometimes it happens the first time I put it back and sometimes I have
to repeat this couple times. It only happens in HD mode. I tried SD
mode and it worked perfectly every time.

If I leave some tape in the beginning (~30 sec) and then rewind the
tape every time before removing it from the camera, this problem does
not show up. I tried it about five times and the tape was still playing
good. This may be a recommended way of ejecting the tape, but it should
not be mandatory.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can someone do this
experiment on his/her GR-HD1 camcorder? I would really appreciate any
help. If it does not happen with other cameras, then it must be my
unit. Otherwise it may be a design flaw and all GR-HD1 owners should
know about it before they lose something precious.

Please help. Thanks a lot.

David Kennett June 5th, 2005 01:21 PM

Aver,

Sorry to hear of your problem. I've had an HD-10 for two years now, and have not seen anything like that. Have you tried capturing the video. It might capture OK, while not decoding properly in the camera.

Sometime back, I got a JVC D-VHS deck. I was surprised to find that I could make a firewire copy of a data stream recorded off the air (even 1080i) onto the HD-10. The camera screen gave a message indicating that it could not decode it, BUT it played back fine through the D-VHS deck's decoder, and could even be copied back to the D-VHS.

In short, you may be able to get a good firewire capture (or copy) even though the camera's decoder doesn't like it. If the camera is new, send it to JVC. If you have to pay for the repair - I guess that's a judgement call.

Good luck.

Aver Mapub June 5th, 2005 04:29 PM

David,

I appreciate your response. The capture also does not work. I don't have access to a D-VHS deck yet, but I will try it. I saw one more such issue reported a few months ago in this forum, but I don't if and how it was resolved.

It may be due to the tape quality. I was using TDK DVM60 tape I bought at Costco. When I use a Panasonic tape I am able to eject and replay it. I did it a few times and it has played fine so far. However, I still feel nervous about it.

The camera is new but it was not bought from an authorized dealer. So I don't know if JVC will honor the warranty. I will try it anyway.

Regards.

Release Me, a short film, on web now (shot with HD10)

http://homepage.mac.com/hmcknight/re...eTheater8.html

"Release Me", shot on the HD10, starring Chantal Simpson and Ben Affan.

It's in DV and small, but at least you can see what Jon Fordham and I did in December 2003. I cut it with the first Lumiere HD and Final Cut Pro 4 and 4.5. I chose Pixlet as the format to cut in FCP, and Apple told me I was the only person doing it. I never had a problem with it, either.

Check out the reviews of the HD10 here, by Jon:

Iris Stuck HD10

Hello,

A friend of mine is experiencing an unusual problem that I have not been able to help him. He has, as well as myself, an JY-HD10U and sudenly he is not able to record any image in any mode (DV, SD, HD or still), but there is no problem with recording audio or even the color bars when selected on the menue. It seems to me that basically the iris is stuck for whatever reason.

We have tried to get any troubleshooting information from the JVC website, without any success. Have any on you experience the same? Is there any "easy" way to try to open the iris either via any menu command or manually? He has a project comming up very soon and he will not be able to send the camera for factory repair. Again, there is no problem with recording audio or color bars, or even playing back previously recorded maerial.

Thanks for your help,

Luis

Stuck Iris!

I too have experienced the stuck shutter! I have one cam which I cannot use and one that when I set down the tripod I saw the image blink in the viewfinder s I watched the shot. So .. I surmise, gravity can override the spring on the "top" (?) blade? I'm gonna try some light impact in reverse and see if I can free it up.

Short of that It's to the hole of JVC service!
Aaaahhhhhhhhh!

Quick Release plate for my HD100U and Glidecam

Hey,

I just got a glidecam v20 (used) that I want to use for my HD100U, however, there is not connecting quick release to mount the camera on the Glidecam plate so I need to get a piece that would connect the Camera bottom to the Glidecam plate. Such as a quick relase. Just not sure which one I need and is best for what I need. I believ its two peices. One to screw on the plate and another for the camera bottom so you can easily release the camera from the Glidecam.

Hope it makes sense. I am new to this so please bare with me.

JVC - Service rocked for me!

I sent our HD10s to JVC Factory in Mid Dec. Got 'em back on Jan 4. Image sensor replaced, new firmware. I was surprised as soooo many bemoan their service. While it is true that you NEVER get return E-Mail ... The phones (is this 2006?) actually work and all it cost me was postage to NJ! JVC rocks for me!

Horizontal motion issues?

http://www.showreel.org/memberarea/article.php?141

I read this article provided by another poster, and came across these coments. I haven't heard these issues mentioned befor, and truthfully I am not sure what they are exactly. Can any one explain and or verify them to me?

"Two years ago I looked at the single-chip JVC HD10 HDV camera. We tested it and found that it had unacceptable horizontal motion issues, including a bad strobing on the side plates."

Ken Hodson January 25th, 2006 08:33 PM

Good job Daniel. You managed to keep the lighting and look of the film fairly consistant throughout. No easy task! Keep up the good work.

Graham Hickling January 25th, 2006 08:40 PM

"...bad strobing on the side plates..."

Like that wedding I was at in the late 80s!

But seriously, I've seen that statement too and wondered what the heck they were on about?

Dave Ferdinand January 25th, 2006 09:35 PM

More bad mouthing on the HD10. I never heard of this and never witnessed anything resembling the description. Maybe they were unfortunate and got a camera that was defective.

Dave Ferdinand January 25th, 2006 09:42 PM

You gotta love those colors. But the compression makes everything look very jittery.

JVC HD10u unknown device problems

Hello all,

I have not used my HD10 in a year and now want to try out Vegas 6.

I used to use the little JVC cuVH1 tape deck to download video into Cineform but now when i plug in either unit it says the USB port in an unknown device and windows does not recognize it and I am sure I am service pack 2.

I remember something about having to find the unit in Device manager or add hardware but I am not finding JVC anything anywhere. And if I am using i-link firewire why is it getting USB errors. I thought USB and firewire where 2 different animals.

Can I download the driver somewhere? I have the original install disk but it says JVC MPEG edit studio on it, was there another disk i am not finding that has the drivers?

Last year i was doing all sorts of editing with no trouble but now i cant seem to get windows to allow me to use it

Graham Hickling February 5th, 2006 08:07 PM

Those cameras have BOTH firewire AND USB ports and cables. (The USB is used for transfering still images)

Can you confirm that you are definitely using the firewire ports? If so, it's very strange that you are getting a USB eror message!

Its the firewire, and I am trying to plug it into the front panel of computer. I also try plugging it into the Soundblaster Audigy2 firewire ports but get nothing on the front nor the back, this is discouraging, I was using this with no troubles last year

Joel Kreisel February 9th, 2006 12:09 AM

I've got a "wet set" shoot coming up this summer, but I was planning on making one myself. It's a small camera so it shouldn't be terribly difficult. As far as I know there isn't one specifically designed for it, but there are probably generic ones that fit. You could check PortaBrace's website, they're pretty much the name in camera protection.

HD10U+Greenscreen=Spec commercial

Wanted to see how hard it would be to Croma Key with all the HDV mpeg artifacts and found it to be a huge pain in the A$$....wel sorta since it's the first time I've tried it.
Got it to work though.
Here is a Spec commercial I shot for my uncles tortilla factory.
It's in Spanish...
http://s87055845.onlinehome.us/uploa...tillasspec.mov

He liked it and decided to run it on the local Spanish channel Telemundo.
I used After effects to change the spotty artifacty green to a solid green, then did the chroma in premiere.

Hope you guys dig it.

Stephen L. Noe April 8th, 2006 12:19 AM

You've done a good chromakey. I'm sure your client is thrilled. Keep up the good work...

Erik Rangel April 8th, 2006 01:09 PM

Thanks Steven,
One thing I played with on this was digitally racking focus between the main actors and the background. I used the blur effect in premiere. Don't know if any body picked that up because it was subtle but it was kind of neat to have total control over the focusing...in post.
