Please, help me with the MPEG EDIT Program
guys, u got to help me!!
ive bought the JVC-JYHD10 this week... when i opened the bag, i couldnt find the CD-ROM installation for the MPEG EDIT program that usually comes with the camcorder. the friend of mine who bought it to me just trashed the CD-ROM within the box of the camcorder!!!!! ahrgg I cant find the software anywhere, not even in the jvc site... only you can help me with it! someone can send it to somewhere so i get it? someone can make a copy of it as a image cd? i really need to see this program working, as is the only way to get the footage inside the computer!!! thanks ciao |
You may want to call JVC and explain what happened. Have you registered the camera yet? That will help to make sure you actually own the camera, which means JVC will likely send you a new copy of the software. I don't know if they'll charge you or not for a new copy, like 20 bucks or something.

That may be for HD in general (i.e., VariCam, CineAlta, etc) but I'm fairly sure it won't directly apply to the HD10. Someone should shoot a grayscale chart and look at it on a waveform monitor so we can know the answer.

Architectural Videography with JY-HD10U - How good?
During the next year, I'd like to do exterior videography of buildings and other structures. As you are well aware, modern building are a matrix of glass and steel, with many straight as well as curved lines. All the preliminary photography with SD dv cameras is making me dizzy with aliasing effects (like jagged lines) and weird looking patterns. This is with a Sony PD-150 at beyond 10x zoom, using a tripod and image stabilization off.
What will the HD10 buy me in terms of avoiding some of these problems? Who has done panning shots of buildings, and steadicam walk-arounds? Will I be shocked by visual anomalies when the video is played back on a 65" HD display or projected with a dlp? Are accesories like a screw-on 2X lens worth it to keep the jvc in optical zoom as long as possible? |
I would think that for architectural videography you'd need a good wide-angle adapter... wouldn't you?

I totally agree with Chris, this camera is anything but wide. For the SD aliasing effect, you should try working in progressive mode (with a camera supporting it of course!), it is much better than interlaced.

Our camera was missing 2 pixels as well. But like you said B&H is great for their exchange policy. Besides they are just sending them back to JVC anyways. My guess is that 6 months from now we are all going to be whining about dead pixels with this cam

Videography does HD10 review (part one out now)
I'm about halfway through the article, and so far, they kind of skimp on the real lack of manual controls, though they do admit it has both pro and amateurish features (amateurish, they say, being some of the shooting styles, like black and white, etc.).
Then I noticed the cover is the same photo of the L.A. DP with the HD10 as that JVC Roadshow I posted up a few days ago. And Videography is a sponsor. Coincidence? The review seems to be more like a preview, but it is a two-parter, part two covering editing. This may just be a kiss-@$$ session for JVC, and this IS a freebie magazine... I bet we can find the review online at videography.com... I'll read the rest and post my thoughts. Hope this isn't a BS review. Also, in an annual MovieMaker special, the magazine has an ad for an L.A.-based rental house with big lens-equipped mini-dv cameras. Without a big lens, but displayed prominently, is the HD10. That's a good sign, because that means rental houses are taking it seriously. I have been totally out of touch for the whole month of October. I have been all over the continent of Africa shooting a documentary. I'm here at the Nairobi airport finally able to connect to my email and DVinfo. BTW -I shot 73 hours of footage with the HD10 over here and will share details soon.
I was hoping that by time I returned there would be some sort of breakthough -- wow. So whats the deal? Can I use my G4 DP 1gig? Will all I need is Panther? Thanks!! |

TV Tech likes HD10U
The latest issue of TV Technology (10/29/03)has a lengthy review of the camera. He liked it so much he even used it to capture audio only! He also used it to provide B roll footage for a major production and found it held up well with Betacam footage as well as 3 chip DV cameras. He concludes by saying "the HD10U can be a very dependable tool for a wide range of applications today...I see this camera moving easily among shoots of special events, corporate and retail applications and even broadcast."

Playing Back WM9 file
I encode a 720p footage shot by JVC HD1 as wm9 file by the template of 720p in Vegas. When I play back the wm9 file in my 32" monitor, the video does not fill the full screen. Is it normal?
I tend to put the wm9 file in one DVD disc. What is the bitrate that produces the best video quailty and the file size is OK to a DVD disc? |

Is your 32" a widescreen HD set? If it's a 4:3 set, then no it won't fill up your entire screen, you'd have black bars at the top and bottom of the image. If it's a 16:9 set, then make sure you have WMP set at "Full Screen" and it should work no problem. You can get to full screen right clicking on the WMP screen when the clip is playing and clicking on "Full Screen" or just typing ALT+ENTER. Troy |

Artifacting at the end of tape
Seems like the final minute of material on each tape has heavy artifacting. It is not 100% constant though (some much worst than others).
I dont remember ever reading of this being a problem. Any insight?? Steven Galvano |
I too have noticed this... at the beginning also.
I'm using jvc mini dv tapes and kinda figured that I needed to pack the tape first. I haven't tried it yet though. I didn't want to burn my cameras motors fast forwarding and rewinding each tape before i used it. Next time I'm gonna try TDK or Sony dv tapes. E. |
The first few minutes and last few minutes of tape are statistically more likely to have dropouts and other anomalies than the rest of the tape. I record bars for the first minute or so and try to never record anything important on the last minute or two. If I am shooting a critical scene and the tape comes to an end, I always reshoot the last minute or two to be safe.

Audio glitch at scene changes
I am noticing a short drop-out in the audio at each scene change when I play back recordings in HD mode taken with my GR-HD1U. I timed the silent period to be about .88 sec before the audio starts up at every new scene. The video plays back normally. I've read a lot of reviews and boards both before and after buying the camera and don't recall anyone reporting this phenomenon. Is anyone else experiencing these audio drop-outs, or do I have a defective unit? (If you are NOT experiencing the audio glitch, I'd like to hear feedback about that, too.)

This is a known idiosyncrasy with both the HD1 and HD10. I posted it some time ago on this forum. It doesn’t seem to get much negative critique since most people edit all scenes. Just have to account for it recording. |
Thanks, Raymond. I had intended to also search DV Info Net on this, but then forgot after I signed up. Nobody ever confirmed this anomally on any of the other boards I posted to. I'm still researching the various potential Mac editing solutions before I can do any editing, though.

Picture mode question/test?
I was looking at the Marine Pack and noted that it didn't mention control of digital stills from the housing so I referenced the HD10 manual. The manual stated that when you snap a pic during HD video mode, it saves it to the memory card as well as long as you've set that option up in the menu settings.
Can anyone verify if you can do this while in REC PAUSE? That would make the marine pack a more viable option because you wouldn't have to worry about switching the selector to picture mode to snap an underwater pic. If it can only record to memory while you are actually recording, no biggie... Anyone taking digital stills with this unit? Thanks. Troy Future HD10 owner in waiting! :) |

Refresher: How to make links to web site addresses
Chris Hurd and the wranglers have showed the way. When putting down an http://www.websitename.com, it doesn't automatically become "hyper linked." Here's what you do:
Make this-- [ url ] http://www.anywhere.com [ /url ] But make sure there are NO spaces, like I put up there, between any of the letters. I had to do that because it automatically hyperlinks if I don't put spaces between [ and url, etc. Please do this, so others can simply click on the link. THANKS! heath |
Telephoto Lens suggestion for GR-HD1?
Preferably a greater than 1.6X magnification....

Century Optics http://www.centuryoptics.com are the cleanest lenses I've tried. They make a 2X (I've heard this is what ESPN uses) with a 58mm thread so you just use a 58 to 52mm converter. At the widest setting of the JVC there is some vignetting so ya just go in a bit. It lists for $495. They also make a great .65 (no vignetting even at the widest setting) for the same list price.

Is new show shot on HD10u
I just caught the last 15 minutes of the Alan Cumming show on the Oxygen channel. There is an interview Alan Cumming is conducting with Liv Tyler at an amusement park where the highlights were blown and there were times when you could see the exposure changing to compensate for the change in lighting. And although there was a problem with the lighting some of the video looked very filmlike. I could have sworn I saw a glimpse of the HD10u during the interview but i am not sure.

First Light with the HD1
I received my HD1 yesterday and just started using it.
I couldn't get myself to spend the extra $1,000 on the HD10 and I thought having a "free" 30000U would be nice too. THe differences I have read about don't exactly add up to $1000 more for the HD1... Maybe I'm mistaken... The edge enhancement on the HD1 is quite noticeable, especially when projecting the image on a very large screen. I noticed that the edge enhancement seems to be more pronounced when the exposure is not properly set (too low), and/or when the lighting is too dim. I imagine that this results from the shadows going black, causing a harsher transition to enhance? I read a long thread on exposure control, but it covered a mix of HD1 and HD10 information. There was no indication to which camera the posts referred to. I'm currently at the point where I believe you can lock in an exposure offset with the exposure setting (dial, click thingy?) and then either select aperature (iris) or shutter priority. If I lock exposure offset and then use the S/A button, does the exposure lock unlock? It looks to me like you want to select the exposure offset first and lock it, then go into S/A and set your shutter speed and let the aperature (iris) compensate. Sucks for depth of field control, but allowing the shutter speed to change is far more noticeable (at least to me). Especially when it transitions from 60 fps to 30 fps. I need to experiment more, obviously. Can anyone provide their input for exposure control on the HD1 ONLY? (or at least, make a note that you're talking about the HD10). There isn't just a lack of latitude... I'd call it no latitude! It looks like you either have to have your lighting and exposure set just perfect, or you will get all kinds of color noise and super edge enhancement. I noticed the noise on reds especially. The LCD may indeed be useful because it shows artificial false colors when the exposure is too high or too low. It seems like you need to watch for over exposure at the same time you try and get the colors in the LCD to look right and then you end up with some good footage. Anyone have a method for checking HD1 exposure they can describe? Some comments: The camera is not that bad to use. I read some horror stories on other forums. There are some really bad ergonomic issues though. Those dials (like the menu and exposure dials) are TERRIBLE. You keep on entering the menu when trying to adjust shutter speed or F-stop. The selector/record knob/switch is also not too cool. I can switch modes on my TRV900 with my thumb. Can't do this on this camera without a whole lot of trouble. I imagine it gets easier... I've also almost dropped it a few times by grabbing the "handle" incorrectly. Overall, I'm excited about it. The ergonomics can be dealt with, and the video quality (even with the obvious edge enhancement) is WORLDS better than standard DV from my TRV900. The video takes some getting used to as it is so much sharper. Maybe this is the EE problem... As others have stated, you have to get your lighting (or exposure settings) just right, or forget it. If you're not lit enough, your color goes to heck in a handbasket, as does the sharpness. The image becomes a bunch of fake grey and white edges. Thanks for this EXCELLENT forum!!!
