1.5GB --> 240MB what do you think divx5+mp3

What do you think about the quality of this clip: encoded to about 3Mb/s 1280:720 resolution.

I know the camer shakes (like a lot) but the idea is to get your honest opinion on quality vs. bitrate.

Looked good, pretty artifact distraction free.
It does show how poor the stabilization of the JVC is. It needs either a tripod or steady cam mount.
The detail coupled with the motion made me queasy, literally.

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 2004--FOCUS Enhancements, Inc.(NASDAQ SC: FCSE), a worldwide leader in video production and conversion technology, today announced that it has become a supporter of the high-definition video (HDV) format established by the HDV forum, which includes Canon, Sharp, Sony and JVC. A new 30p to 24p (or 25p) option?

There's this "revolutionary" mathematician who started up a company and is claiming to have created a program that can convert any frame rate to another frame rate. Here's the press release. The plug in is VERY expensive, though. A guy said he saw the various plug ins for himself, and said they are nothing short of amazing.

http://www.algolith.com/media/news/n...=NABfrcPR.html

Rob Lohman April 24th, 2004 12:39 PM

$1295-1995 isn't what I would call very expensive if it can do
what it claims. This means we can finally watch TV shows here
in Europe from the US without the stutter (some shows are
better than others). Ofcourse it is very expensive for a low
budget film maker. But he or she can just put it up on the web
for anyone to view. This is meant for serious TV and movie work.

If it is really that good then post/transfer companies will probably
buy the plugin(s) and offer their services to us customers at a
lower price since they can split the cost in that way.

Wide angle lens question

Purchasing a wide angle lens for the HD10. We are considering the Century optics .65 and the Cavision .65 Both allow zoom through. Now here is the problem. I was going to get a lens with a 58mm thread and an adaptor from 52mm just as in this link from B&H:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/cont...=179387&is=REG

I was talking to a support person from Cavision and he told me that I needed to get a lens with a 52mm thread. He said I could not use any of the Cavision 58mm wide angles as the adaptor ring would be visable. Is this true? If so how can Century optics sell their wide angle with a 52mm to 58mm ring adaptor? This system will be working with a Cavision 3X3 matte box which I was told would not be a problem but the adaptor ring for the wide angle would be if I didn't go with the 52mm.

Help.
Ken

Ray Van Eng May 2nd, 2004 09:29 AM

SONY sells a 52mm wide adapter for their TRV900 camcorders. The lens is all glass (P/N #VCL-0752H) and it allows zoom through. It might work well with the HD10U as the TRV900 lens has more or less the same angle of coverage as the HD10U lens. Vignetting may still be a problem though. The SONY wide-adapter sells for about $55 on eBay which should be cheaper than something that Century might offer.

Keep in mind that practically all wide-adapters protrude forward and in SONY's case, the front element is about 77mm in diameter. So that may present problems for your matte-box.

Ken Hodson May 3rd, 2004 12:17 AM

I checked with Cavision if there would be any problems with viginetting when I add the Cavision 3x3 matte box with the .65 Cavision wide angle. . Apparently at the max zoomed out it is boarder line. You can see just a slight amount of viginetting, but if you zoom in just slightly there is no problem. Or you can remove a small amount of the inside edge of the matte box to fully fix any viginetting issues. I figure my trusty dremel with a sanding bit will fix it easily as you only have to remove a slight amount.
The cavision wide angle front is 72mm and is totaly compatable with all their matte boxes.

HD10u 35mm adapter process (where is it)

Is there a working process for creating a shallow depth of field 35mm like adapter for the hd10u, and where is that process located (a link, etc). I have read the links on the matter on this site and have been unable to locate a step by step process. If anyone knows of such a link I would greatly appreciate it. I have the process for the static gg adapter but the high def poses special problems.

GR-HD1 audio question

I have had the camera for about a month now. I love the picture quality on a HD TV. The only problem I have is the audio. I have a XLR mic from Radio Shack plugged into a Samson Mixpad 4. From the mixpad it goes 1/4" adapted to 1/8" to the camera. With the same setup on a GL-1, attenuator off, I was able to get a clear sound from the actors. With the HD1, I get a hiss that doesn't sound good. The mic also came with a cable that goes to 1/4" stereo plug, which is adapted to 1/8" for the external mic. With this, not going through the mixer, the level through the headphones is real low. Is the Beachtek able to fix the problem, if I avoid going through the mixer? I also found SignVideo has a less expensive similar product. I would prefer to go through the mixer, and at this time can not afford a DAT. I tried to search through the forum for a solution.

Thank you.

Anyone used JY-HD10U Cleaning Tape

Anyone used JY-HD10U Cleaning Tape? Any hassle with it or was it fine?

Thanks

I think I found a solution. I have a Sony MD that can record, and using the mixer and line in, I can record good sound. Instead of DAT, I will try using the MiniDisc.

HDV support on tapeless drives?

I found this via a surfer/friend here on the boards.

I have to admit, slapping a hard drive on the back would be a lot easier, esp. since my friend and I are producing HD content together (I shoot, he edits) and he doesn't even have the VH1 deck...

Sorry that the news is slightly old!

I've used the regular JVC DV cleaning tape - didn't know there was a special one for the HD10. After entering record, the camera told me to use cleaning tape - sure 'nuff, clogged head. Glad I had the tape with me.

Wide angle lens

I have a wide angle that's too small for the HD-1 but otherwise is pretty nice. If I take the lens into a camera store what sort of thread adaptor should should I ask for for the HD-1 half?

If that doesn't work what's everybody's new favorite choice for wide adaptors for the HD-1?

Thanks all:)

HD10 vs PDX10 final decision

This is very tough one, but I can't keep them both. I like so many things offered by PDX10, but I love the higher resolution of HD10 more. So long story short, the PDX10 is in the classfields.

Hd10u Is Friggin Awesome.

Just wanted to say that for $3,000 I have an awesome camera that makes incredible moving images. I'm editing in Final Cut Pro (thanks to LumiereHD) and it's amazing...it looks like "a window outside". Those are my girlfriends words.

For all the crap we've endured with this camera...it was worth it. It's got an amazing image compared to all DV cameras....and I've used them all. (ok, most!)

Anyone have 100 megs of space I can borrow, so I can post a clip?

Problems dubbing from VHS to the Camera

I am a UK GR-PD1 owner and I have been having problems trying to dub footage from a VHS deck to my PD1, I have been using the supplied S-Video/ Video and scart connector and have followed the instructions in the manual, but I get no picture on the lcd screen and when recording it just records black space and no video. I am using the scart connector with the yellow video cable to connect to the VHS, the manual states to connect all the leads to the scart connector (including S-Video) when connecting to a Scart equipped VHS deck, I have tried with both the S-video and Analog Video connected, with just analog video connected but with no success. Has anyone else managed to dub from VHS to their PD1/HD1/HD10U? If you have how did you connect up the camera?

I hope someone can help out with this, Need to get some stuff off VHS asap!

Thanks

Understanding filter "numbers"

I am poised to buy a "Soft Contrast" filter and a wide adapter for my HD1. The SC filter is Tiffen brand, measured as 1,2,3,4,5. AM I correct in assuming that the "1" will produce the least effect?

And for the wide adapter, am I correct that a .72x will be wider than a .48x adapter?

Thanks

HDV popular at NAB2004

We've all gotten crap for owning this camera, but take a look at this here. Apparently, the interest in HDV is real stuff even to NAB types who traditionally have been high $$$ spenders. I don't think the general television crowd is turned off by HDV...instead, it's going to be an affordable way to make the transition to HD.

Next year those two 5's will be 3's and 2's.

Weird color rendering issue

Here's a strange issue I haven't seen posted here before. Most of the regulars here probably know about the UFO green cigar incident, but here's a new one.

Took my HD10 outside this weekend to do some shooing in the bright sunlight. Since the sun was really bright, I slapped ND0.6 filter ontop of ND0.9 and got the iris opened to F5.6 (I guess) at 1/30. So far, so good. But when checking the footage afterwards, I noticed a guy who was with us, appeared wearing a green outfit on the video although he was wearing dark blue when I was shooting. So I took the camera outside again and did some testing.

White balance was set to Fine, shutter priority at 1/30, AGC off.

First frame grab without any filters:
http://www.ztnmaps.com/no_filter.png

With ND0.3, everything normal:
http://www.ztnmaps.com/nd_03.png

With ND0.6, still looks ok to me:
http://www.ztnmaps.com/nd_06.png

With ND0.9, you can kinda see some slight greenish tint already:
http://www.ztnmaps.com/nd_09.png

ND0.9 + ND0.6, Behold the green slime!
http://www.ztnmaps.com/nd_09+06.png

So, here's the question: could it be that ND0.6 with 09 was too much and what we're seeing here is the camera wrongfully trying to compensate color information which was suppressed by the double filters? Thoughts?

Compatible with RT2500?

Hello, (this is my first post)

We have been using the XL-1 with the Matrox RT2500 capture card for corporate videos and streaming videos. We'd like to upgrade to the JY-HD10U, but we want to make sure it will fit into our current pipeline before we take the plunge.

Although I know we wouldn't be taking advantage of the HD capabilites, if we used the DV 4:3 mode, could we caputre it just like out current XL-1? It should be the standard IEEE-1394 NTSC capture right?

Can anyone confirm that the DV mode of this camera works just like the standard 4:3 NTSC camera capture?

Thanks!

Bill Piedra June 14th, 2004 09:34 AM

Chris -

Yes - the JY-HD10U will allow you to capture DV in 4:3 mode just like any other DV Camera. BUT this camera isn't going to produce anywhere near as nice an image in DV mode as your 3 Chip XL-1. I think you will be disappointed, especialy with the color, if you are using the camera for regular DV.

Ken Hodson June 14th, 2004 02:56 PM

My guess is it is a form of chroma noise from you blocking too much light. I don't think you need to filter so much while you are in indoor light environments.
Ken

Sten Newfield June 14th, 2004 09:00 PM

It was outdoors actually. But I think you're right, it seems like a chroma noise although the AGC was off.

Dub JY-HD10U to HDCam

Does anyone know the best way to convert 720P video from the HD10U to an HDCam tape? We're making a documentary with primarily Sony F900/3s, but we want to occasionally use a the HD10U as a second or third camera.

We downconvert all of or HDCam tapes to DVCam to edit in FCP, then reassemble at a post house. We don't want to have two formats to deal with in post - such as 720P and 24P.

It seems the only way to get the HD signal out of the HD10U is to use the firewire, which is not supported by any HDDecks.

I had someone try to capture the HD10U's video into FCP using Hueris software, then rescale, and then render the video to 24P, then output the results on a Kona card to an HDCam deck, but the results were jitterly and the in fast motion. This person has stopped working on a solution...

Has anyone found a way to convert the video from a JY-HD10U to HDCam?

Thanks,
Jim

David Newman June 30th, 2004 05:29 PM

It sounds like you were on the right track. The biggest issue is the frame rate not the resolution. Even the camera does an OK job of upscaling 720p to 1080i on its analog output. But with the up-scale you still have 30P not 24P, which it seems you need. 30P to 24P conversion is very difficult to do well. You previous attempt likely used frame blending or frame duplication which will look jittery. Tools like Magic Bullet and Twixtor can perform this conversion with motion interpolation that produces good results with a lot of rendering time.
