zoom focus adapter

I there a zoom and/or focus control adapter for the hd10u like there is for other cams.

Obin Olson February 17th, 2004 06:45 PM

I am making a radio control focus system for the dvx100 camera..it may also fit this camera with little modification...I will keep you posted if you want to send me an email :

Just curious how you plan to use such a focus ring wheel?
is it just to make it easier to grab, or are you going to attempt to hit predefined focus set points?
The JVC has some major problems with repeating focus positions, because the focus ring is controlling a servo that is running open loop. There is a lot of non mechanical slop in there.

A simple test to try: Focus on an object from the infinity side, and mark the position. Now rack it to the closeup side , and focus on the same object as before. The two positions are not the same.

Happy Error Message

Just experienced a real "Pro" feature of the HD10. I was in the middle of shooting, when a "USE HEAD CLEANING TAPE" message appeared. Sure enough, a head was clogged! I used the cleaning tape, checked it out, and continued. It sure saved the day!

Heath McKnight February 26th, 2004 04:08 PM

Yeah, I like how some of the newer cameras can alert you to that. You may want to go to our Tape Thread and ask which tapes may cause that.

Paul Mogg March 2nd, 2004 03:05 PM

I agree with you Les, as the camera doesn't really have a true manual focus, it won't be possible to repeat focus positions using the focus ring, except by visual reference combined with manual adjustment. Without a large monitor attached I find it very hard to get extremely accurate focus (that you need for HD) by reference to the LCD screen alone, and the viewfinder might as well not be there for all the use it is, IMO. But this is true of he controls on most consumer level cameras. I find that without an HD monitor attached, the best way to focus is to use the auto focus, zoom in on the object you want to focus on, wait for the auto focus to do it's stuff, and then lock it when focus appears to be achieved. But I'm finding that sometimes even this isn't good enough. ..and of course NEVER leave the auto focus on, it will "hunt " constantly.
It's a whole different world from SD (which now ALL looks out of focus to me).

HD10u get hot during playback and audio & video quit

After doing about 3 hours of playback (HD) & encode, the camera quit sending audio.

I powered it down and back up and it played normal for several minutes more then both video & audio went out. Time code moved but nothing came out.

I picked it up and noticed the bottom was very hot.

I'm giving it the night off.

I have shot with it for an entire day and not noticed it getting overly warm. all cameras get warm/hot when shooting.

I searched but found no posts about this.

Anyone?

Heath McKnight March 11th, 2004 02:55 PM

I haven't had any of those problems, so you may have a unique problem. I would recommend calling JVC tech support ASAP!

But that doesn't mean someone else may not have similar problems like this. Anyone else out there experiencing this situation?

Darker?

Has anyone noticed that the component outs from these cameras is a little on the dark side?

I've turned my LCD down on the camera itself because I don't think it really representative of the component picture to my HD set.

Anyone else?

Sony affordable HD? Is this a confirmation?

What do y'all think?

Is it the same as this camera:

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthrea...threadid=21325

But David Newman said it's probably not an HD camera...

heath

Heath McKnight March 12th, 2004 05:16 PM

I haven't noticed anything, but I'll double check.

heath

David Newman March 12th, 2004 05:17 PM

I said it was not HDV camera. It is HD POV camera.

Heath McKnight March 12th, 2004 05:36 PM

Right, sorry. I did, however, make sure I didn't say it was HDV.

The question is, what is an HD POV camera, in layman's terms.

heath

David Newman March 12th, 2004 05:47 PM

It is a camera head and lens for studio work or sports coverage -- anywhere that a tape transport is completely unnecessary.

Dale Larsen March 13th, 2004 12:36 PM

the camera worked fine the next day.
I have been using it less continously and had no more problems.

I also cleaned the heads, so it may have been clogging.

HD10U Rentals?

Hi. I have been scanning this forum for awhile now, and it is very informative. I would love to do some tests with this camera. Does anyone know where a good cheap rental place I can rent it for a couple days or possibly even a owner that would be willing to rent it out. I am from Canada. Which would probably make a difference. Anyways, thanks. I hope to here from some of you.

I have seen some ads in video magazines offering rentals. Specifically, don't remember which ones, but they were in L.A. and were geared more towards digital filmmaking. They also had DVX100A's and the like for rent, too.

Troy Lamont March 17th, 2004 07:07 PM

Check out Hollywood Studio Rentals.

Funny, I just recommended them to somone else in another forum today!

Also check out Studio Gear. They are in Wisconsin which may be closer (or a shorter trip) depending on which part of Canada you're in.

Good luck.

Rep from JVC HD10- PAL is needed

Representative of JVC PAL community, please show yourself..I want to buy me GR-HD10 (no U)

Ed Hill April 2nd, 2004 10:43 PM

Here we go with the HD 10

Well next week we'll be shooting docudrama and interviews for 6 days straight. I won't have time to post here but I'll try to make notes on how the HD10 performs. ONe thing I noticed in my tests of the camera is that the lens really lets you get close to objects. It makes incredibly detailed close ups of small objects at an inch from the lens. Close ups of my cell phone face and chess pieces look very clean.

The viewfinder seems a bit inadequate for razor sharp focus and the lens has no F-stop marks or focus marks on it. One of my early tests with just the color viewfinder, was slightly soft when I pulled the video into the computer.

However, we bought a 9 inch BW Panasonic field monitor which solves the focus issue very nicely. The BW monitor also gives me a better sense of the relative range of whites, grays and blacks. I think its easier to tell if your white highlights are blown out, or if your blacks and shadows are crushed.

Oh yeah... if JVC asks me how to improve this camera, I'll tell them I need absolute manual control over focus, aperture and shutter speed.

Plus a 9 inch BW viewfinder on top......

Yik Kuen April 4th, 2004 02:36 AM

Hi Salim,

You wanted GR or JY?
If I'm not mistaken, JVC only has these 2 categories :

GR-HD1 and
JY-HD10

GR - consumer model
JY - Prosumer model (with XLR adapter)

Kevin A. Sturges April 5th, 2004 11:27 AM

That was interesting information. Let us know how the camera works out for you.

Just wondering, does anyone here know of the JVCGR/HD10U being used for any broadcast work yet? I would love to see some examples of it (either SD or HD...) shown on TV.

I heard a rumor that the guy that does "American Chopper" had used it occasionaly, but it's really hard to pick out if it's made it into the program or not.

I am seeing more and more commercials for HD Satelite networks. You would think cost-effective cams like this would be what DV cams are to broadcast journalism.

Mark Jervis April 5th, 2004 11:58 AM

There is a pilot of a CBS summer show that is being shot with 3 HD10's. Have to wait and see what happens with those. With regards to the American Chopper guys, you would be referring to the shoot I did with them for a show called American Beauty Shop. It was only a pilot. Unfortunately the footage they asked for from me was 16x9 and I had to downconvert that 16x9 footage to DV. The producer made a mistake as the material was really 4x3 so in the actual show they had to take the downcoverted 16x9 footage and zoom and crop on it to get full frame 4x3. Not exactly the best results. I'll let you know if I hear anymore about the shows or if beauty shop reairs.

Kevin A. Sturges April 6th, 2004 03:04 PM

Hey thanks Mark, for the reply :)

Hd1/10 Lens Hood

Need a replacement Lens Hood for HD10 (HD1 is probably the same?)

Can't find the part number/supplier anywhere.

Help?

Sam Sharpe April 8th, 2004 04:25 AM

I dont know of a PAL HD10 with or without the U the closest PAL model is the PD1, which I have, it's not HD just standard PAL res but it shoots progressive frames in the same MPEG2 ts format as the Hd1/HD10U. JVC are not bringing out a PAL HD10, untill next year by which time the 3 chip US/Japan models will be out - if these turn out to shoot 25p or 24p they can be used in PAL land too! JVC PRO UK sell the US HD10U, but it still is a 30fps HD mode.

The PD1 image is downsampled from 1280 X 659 pixels to 720 x 576 16:9 anamorphic ie 1.422 pixel aspect - If you are shooting SD then this model gives some very nice results, im very happy with it especially when comparing my SD footage with other DV cameras, Theres lots more clarity in fine details than with DV - I can see the rain!

I really dont like the look of any compression at all but I can put up with high bitrate MPEG2 MUCH MUCH more than DV 25!

Regards,

Sam Sharpe

Heath McKnight April 8th, 2004 12:58 PM

Go to www.jvc.com and click on the Pro site, then find the HD10 and click on that. There should be a list of parts you can order.

Or call the number listed on your warranty card.

Hope this helps!

heath

Alex Raskin April 8th, 2004 01:52 PM

Thanks Heath, I found the lens hood for GR-HD1, which is supposedly the same as for HD10.

Surprisingly, this accessory is NOT available on JVC's pro site.

Go figure :)

Hard Disk Recording With JY-HD10?

Are there any products that allow a JY-HD10 user to record directly to hard disk?

Jerry Jones
http://www.jonesgroup.net

David Newman April 9th, 2004 01:31 PM

There are no mobile disk units yet as you see in the DV world. However, you can capture to directly to a PC while shoot using the FireWire output. A tad inconvient but it does work.

Jerry Jones April 9th, 2004 02:43 PM

A hard disk-based field recording solution for the HD recording mode would be especially nice.

If anybody hears of such a development, please e-mail:

jerry@jonesgroup.net

Thanks,

Verrrry Interesting!

I have a JVC 30k DVHS (to play m2t files), and just recently added a Samsung SIR-T165 OTA receiver with firewire. On a whim, I connected the HD10 to the 30k (firewire) and played an OTA tape (Men in Black, CBS Sunday nite). The HD10 VF said it could not decode the signal. Undaunted, I pressed HD10 record anyway. It said it was recording - but no pic or sound. I rewound, and lo and behold I could play the HD10 tape through firewire with the 30K decoding - 1080I to my Samsung HLN5065W!

Heath McKnight April 15th, 2004 07:58 AM

With footage? Or none? I'm pretty sure you can transfer from the HD10 to the D-VHS.

Are you talking about going from the HD10 through the D-VHS and into a firewire-capable computer?

heath

David Kennett April 15th, 2004 08:27 AM

Heath,

No, I recorded a 1080I program off the air on the DVHS. I then copied a part of that program to the HD10 (even though the HD10 could not decode it). I then played the HD10 - still no decoding - but the DVHS (through firewire) decoded it fine - to HDTV.

My next step will be to see if the HD10 can be firewired to the tuner and record - and play back - broadcast HDTV WITHOUT DVHS machine. The tuner can completely control the DVHS (through firewire) and even initiate timer recording. If it does that, the HD10 could be a substitute for DVHS. The new companion HDV recorder-player might do this as well!
