Philip:
Thank you for your offer. I have sent an email. Let me know if you received it. My forum login timed out and I had to log back in and I'm not sure if the email went through. |
I think that Bill broke it all down pretty well.
One thing I like to keep in mind is that my hourly rate needs to pay for many other things than just when I am working on video. It needs to pay the rent (both at home and for the studio), it needs to pay for insurance (both for me, and those that work for me and also liability should someone working for me set the filming location on fire), insurance for my equipment and the cost/replacement of the equipment, time spent not shooting but marketing, making sales calls, paying bills, advertising, etc., etc. Some would suggest that you should at least double to 2 1/2 times what you actually want to make per hour because of the overhead expenses and time you need to spend doing these other, related tasks. All of this (in the US) should be based on a 40 hour week where you get "rewarded" for working longer hours. This should only be tempered by what the market will bear and what your customers feel that you are worth. It is possible to make good money but still not be profitable or wind up making less than a minimum living wage. I just won't set up my equipment and almost pay someone to let me do it, unless I feel that I am involved in either "truly" building my business (I avoid low wage deals where the benefit is more of the same kind of work) or I am involved in something I "truly" believe in or have a stake in. Good Luck! |
Thanx guys, helps a lot!
Greetings Niels |
Thanks TIP!!!
That is an extremely useful link. it really simplifies and clarifies the issue.

Music Needed for DVInfo forum shows
We're looking to add original music to the shows we're doing at 2nd-Unit.tv which has a new forum in this DVInfo under New Additions. Your music will be featured in the shows with credits and we have a royalty program for the quarterly DVDs and weekly i-Pod segments that are coming in a few months when we gather sufficient content. You can see if a company by the name of Blowup Productions is still in business. I worked with them about 15 years ago and they arranged everything for the commercial we shot in Rio. Maria Rodriguez, who played the Girl From Ipanema in the film, worked with them and met us at the airport. She's great as well. This is old info but they may be still around.

Film project seeking cast and crew (england)
Hello all,
We are currently trying to assemble a cast and crew for a short film project. It is absolutely essential that we recruit talented, technically brilliant individuals to take on the director of photography and production sound mixer/sound designer positions, and I thought, for these particular positions, this would be a good place to look. Below is the email advertising the production which we are currently sending out far and wide, for example to all the students/graduates of (near enough) all the relevant film and film related degree courses in the UK. ... ‘Open Return’ is the title of a new short film, currently in development/pre-production. Principal photography on ‘Open Return’ is set to take place in September (exact shooting schedule TBA), after which time the project will move into several months of post-production, before the final film is distributed for exhibition on the national/international film festival circuit in January 2007. The ‘Open Return’ project is currently seeking talented, driven individuals to join the project, and become members of the cast and crew that will work to force the final film into existence. At this early stage the production is looking to recruit people of all specializations. Positions in the producing side of things, in the technical side things, and in the acting side of things are all available. If you are passionate about filmmaking, indeed about cinema generally, and think that you could be an asset to the production, do not hesitate to visit www.openreturn.co.uk, where you will find full details about the project, including a break down of every available position and role. You can of course also contact the production via email (mail@openreturn.co.uk) or telephone (07921331082). ... Again, if the project sounds intrigueing, if you are interested in taking on the position of director of photography or of production sound mixer/sound designer (or any other position), visit the website, learn more, and contact us ASAP. I will check this thread frequently, and strive to respond to emails promptly. We look forward to hearing from you David R. Warwick … David R. Warwick director/producer of ‘Open Return’ http://www.openreturn.co.uk email: davidrwarwick@openreturn.co.uk mobile: 07921331082 … |
Hi David, and welcome to DVinfo. I've moved your thread to the "Helping Hands" forum, which is where people go to find jobs around here. Good luck with your project!

Saw that you are from Southampton. Me mum's from there. I spent many a summer walking down from 34 Bond Road to the Triangle fish and chips shop, then enjoying the best fish and chips in the world along the river.
Good times... Welcome to DVinfo! Good luck with your project!! |
Freelance work
Hi everyone,
Do you guys happen to know of website besides here that show freelance production positions? Not to say that the postions you guys have here is not good, I just feel that I need to get more experience on projects in Texas before I start heading out of state. Thanks in advance Shedrick Mask |
Well, my favorites are Mandy.com, entertainmentcarreers.net (which hasn't done anything for me yet, but I still look), and productionhub.com. If you are really desperate for work with no pay, there is always craigslist.org.
For chuckles, you can always see what can be found at this thread- http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthrea...ght=job+offers |
A favour in Toronto
I am looking for a Canon EF adapter to try out. I currently use a Redrock M2 and am trying to devise a Relay lens system with EF lenses.
Anyone in the Toronto Area wanna rent me their EF adapter for a day? Cool Matt |
Must it be NYC?
How about Northern NJ? If that would work, I've heard tell that there is a theater in Montclair that can be "hired".
Though, not sure if my info is correct, i.e. that you can actually "hire" the theater. If you're interested, let me know and I'll try to scrounge more info. good luck. |
I own a small company in Santa Monica
I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring as well. Not only do we have a small production studio in the LA-area, but there is a recording studio here as well. We are also five blocks from the beach. You can see some photos at:

Dallas wedding, second shooter 7/15/06
I am filming a wedding this Saturday. The bride is now requesting a camera in the pews to catch her walking down the aisle, since the church will only allow cameras in the balcony.
You would use my 'ol GL-1. Wedding begins at 6:00. You would need to be there from 5:15 to 7:00. How much???? I don't know. Thanks! |
David,
Give me a call, I can help you out. Ironically I did that very same thing with the F350 last Saturday. A wedding, up in the balcony, then down to the back for the precessional after the ceremony. regards, -gb- |
I have a small production company in LA.
We're currently shooting a documentary about opera, and we know popular music as well.
Here's my husband's personal site: http://www.bradmays.com I'd certainly be interested in hearing more about what you're looking for and when you would need it. Hope to hear from you. |
Greg has stepped up to bat. Thanks to all for looking!

Locations needed
We are looking for the following sorts of locations for our project:
A cubicle farm, or call center with mini-cubes. The more unpleasant the better, but any will do. A small rustic cottage, the more medeival looking the better, the more secluded the better. Interior rooms that could be used as castle dungeons, a large room fore the throneroom of a castle, and intervening corridoors and staircases. If anyone has access to these sorts of locations (Free!) please let us know! |
Houston Area Videographer
I am available in the Houston area to assist as second or third camera in weddings or any other events. Experienced.
Equipment: DSR 390, wireless mike (senn.) |
Need to rent an XL1 or 2, or comparable 3 chip in the San Fernando Valley.
We're shooting a show this weekend in Northridge and need a third camera for Saturday night (call time is 5pm) and Sunday afternoon. We're hoping to find someone who will allow us to use their camera in exchange for our editing services. You'd have your camera back either Sunday night or Monday morning - your choice. Your services as a videographer would not be required, but if you wanted to join us - you'd be welcome.
Here's Brad's editing resume: http://www.bradmays.com/editor.html Demo reel: http://www.bradmays.com/BradMaysDemoReel.mov Brad would be happy to cut either a demo reel or even a short for someone. He normally charges $400 for a reel and rarely under $1500 for a short, so it's a good deal for someone who has footage sitting around. If you'd like to make a counter offer, please do. If you're a beginner videographer who is thinking about doing this, in addition to getting a reel out of it, if you stay around and shoot with us, you'd get an IMDb credit as camera person and a screen credit on a documentary that will likely be broadcast. Thanks. |

I live in MD and can't help you with the locations but--
I visited your website and noticed that you might intend to print your finished movie to film. I thought I might warn you, after reading of your budget woes, that depending on the length of the film, a film print will cost you thousands of dollars, is extremely time-consuming (you must go through your movie scene-by-scene with a colorist) and is generally useless unless you intend to generate revenue (assumedly enough to pay back the price of the film print) at a local theater (which depending on your location can be very difficult and expensive to rent out). Just a heads up. |

Any UK publications where I can find work?
I've just graduated university in the UK with a 1st in film and media and I'm looking for work with a production company.
I'm happy to start making tea as long as I can work my way up in the project development side of a production company. Does anyone know of any publications that will advertise job opportunities in this field? Thank you Alex Butterfield |
Location Advice Needed-HELP (LA/OC)
Hey all.
I'm looking for advice for an upcoming short that I'm doing. I'm hoping there's a no budget/no insurance set I can rent for 2 days. Most set rental requires 1M worth of insurance, which seems to be about $2700. Does anyone know of a place up in/around LA that maybe pads the insurance cost in the bill, like when renting lighting equip? I'm specifically looking for a hospital and motel set. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
