Zdravko Jancevski July 21st, 2006, 07:42 AM I know what is and how to use batch converting from AVI to MPEG but how to use batch capturing from my DV camera to computer, when I have to replace an load next video cassete into camera. So what is the point of meanig of "Batch Capturing".
Regards.
Edward Troxel July 21st, 2006, 07:55 AM Batch Capturing allows you to specify various in/out points for capturing a tape. That way you don't have to capture the entire tape, you can capture small sections instead.
I usually use Batch capture - even when capturing an entire tape. I'll specify different sections of the tape to be captured under specific file names and then let it batch capture those sections. I do this for each tape but do the batch capturing while that tape is still in the deck. I don't see a reason to set up all tapes separately and then batch capture them all because, as you said, you'd have to sit there and change the tapes periodically. So I set one up for capture and capture it. I then set the next one up for capture and capture it.
Ian Slessor July 22nd, 2006, 02:47 PM Hey all,
I'm using Vegas 6.
I'm adding a little blur "out" to some text. The text will vertically blur to nothing.
Up until I have the text blur the "linear blur" FX is set to 0.00 however the text is still slightly blurry. When I select and de-select "linear blur" I notice the difference in the preview window.
Anybody have an idea why this would be so or is it something that will not be noticeable once rendered?
Thanks for your help.
sincerely,
ian
Brian Luce July 23rd, 2006, 02:29 AM I am looking to buy Vegas 5, are there dealers that sell old versions? Is Ebay the best bet for old software? (licensed of course).
Also, do all version of V5 support HDV? I have a JVCHD100.
Daniel J. Wojcik July 23rd, 2006, 06:22 AM My conclusion so far is that one of the files used in my total build is not being read by my page file on my NLE.
A 0xC0000005 exception is a bad memory read, so that could be it.
I occasionally "defragment" the pagefile by removing it completely, defragging the drive, then putting the pagefile back in a nice contiguous block. Maybe give it try?
Oh....and do you have the pagefile set to static size? Or variable? Static is better.
Steven Davis July 23rd, 2006, 11:09 AM I'll have to check, I'm sure it's default
Yegor Sak July 23rd, 2006, 02:35 PM Does Vegas 6 have some kind of chromakey tool?
I tried applying the "Track FX" and selecting Sony Chromakeyer, but I didn't have much success. Is there a guide of some sort that I can use to achieve this effect?
What Im trying to achieve is the solid white background behind my subject.... kind of like those new Apple ads, with the 2 guys.
Dan Gadd July 23rd, 2006, 03:26 PM I've been looking around a little and can't find a comprehensive set of video effect plug-ins for Vegas 6 that I like or trust. Any recommendations?
James Talus July 23rd, 2006, 05:32 PM Hey everyone. I need help again! I have a vegas project where I changed the speeds of several video clips by holding down the control key and dragging the edge of the clip to change the speed. But now I want to return them to their original, normal, speed.
Anyone know how to get them to 100% normal speed?
Thanks
Harry Burnette July 23rd, 2006, 06:00 PM Sure does..it is built in.
Check out this quick tutorial..it will get you started.

Yegor Sak July 23rd, 2006, 07:03 PM Thanks a bunch!
Don Bloom July 23rd, 2006, 07:28 PM If you have EXCALIBUR there is a tool to "desquiggle" if not you can use the control key and "push" the footage back to the original position but you might find it easier to replace the clip with the original footage from the media bin or explorer.

Edward Troxel July 23rd, 2006, 07:32 PM Hold down the CTRL key again and resize it back to the original length. It should snap as you approach the 100% position.
Another way is to right-click the event, choose Properties, and then change the playback rate back to 1. However, you'll have to change the length of the clip to match the new speed.
And the method I typically use is via a script I wrote which will reset it back to normal speed and reset the length.
Don Bloom July 23rd, 2006, 07:33 PM You might like NEWBLUEFX.com-they have some very nice stuff-so does Excalibur and the ones on the VAAST site. Sorry my mind just isn't giving me the name of the exact product at this moment but I'm sure someone will chime in with it.
WAIT-it's ULTIMATE S-I had to NOT think of the name and presto! It came to me.
Any and or ALL of them have effects you might find helpful.
Don B.
Edward Troxel July 23rd, 2006, 07:34 PM I don't necessarily have a comprehensive list but a couple sets I have used in the past can be found at newbluefx.com and zenote.com.
Don Bloom July 23rd, 2006, 07:42 PM Place a GENERATED MEDIA SOLID background (white) on a track BELOW the footage-I change the 255 to 235 to tone it down a bit but thats me.
Apply the chromakey FX to the clips or to the TRACK header, use the eyedropper on the color you want to eliminate and BINGO, its done, AS LONG AS; the background you are eliminating is evenly lit and doesn't have any shadows on it, otherwise it can be a bear to get rid of.

Douglas Spotted Eagle July 23rd, 2006, 09:21 PM You can find several Vegas/keying tutorials at http://www.vasst.com/search.aspx?text=Chromakey
Use Levels, coupled with a black matte to create the Apple look. pretty easy, overall, particularly if you shot with that concept in mind.
Douglas Spotted Eagle July 23rd, 2006, 09:24 PM Pixelan would be my fave overall, but there are a lot of plugins, some free and most purchased.
Here is a list of every Vegas plugin available, so far as I'm aware.
http://www.vasst.com/?v=training/Vegasplugsnew.htm
Yegor Sak July 24th, 2006, 02:09 AM What about the shadows? Something tells me getting those to appear properly wont be so easy.
Ryan King July 24th, 2006, 06:44 AM the weirdest things have happened to me tonight.. I have been trying to dump a swf from swish as a uncompressed avi, which plays perfectly in WMP, but only plays the very first frame in vegas.. so...I used winavi to re-export my working avi again, put it in vegas..all works well UNTIL RENDER!
I render and everything is there except that particular avi, I re-dumped it again, and it seems anything I dump from winavi will not render in vegas(however, it plays in the preview window)...strangest thing!
I tried using other converters but the quality is just terrible..the best looking avi I have which looks fantastic is the orginal uncompressed avi from swish..even winavi knocked it down in quality, but I could live with it if I could get the thing to render from vegas.. anyone got a clue? I've exausted myself!
Jesse Redman July 24th, 2006, 09:33 AM I'm getting ready to start shooting some music videos, after shooting corporate for the last several years. Most of the corporate videos have been for internal use. The few that have been broadcast, I have given to corporate PR.
What should my render setting be for rendering a music video for broadcast? I will probably have to give it to a local conversion company to convert to Beta or Digibeta. I will ask them what is the best format but I don't think they will be able to tell me what are the best render settings for Vegas.
I know quite a few DViers shoot music videos for broadcast. Any suggestions, past experiences?
Thanks in advance,
Douglas Spotted Eagle July 24th, 2006, 09:45 AM 4:2:2 uncompressed if you're going to DigiBeta. If they're an HD-only acceptance (many are now heading that way) then you'll need to consider HDCAM in the mix as well. but, if you're acquiring DV, then that takes you out of the HD game.
Mathew Kurtz July 24th, 2006, 10:26 AM This is the directory I used, hope it helps: http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/partners/resellers.asp
Jesse Redman July 24th, 2006, 10:36 AM What about for Beta?
And, are there other formats that I may be asked to supply?
What about 16:9 vs 4:3? Is 16:9 acceptable?
Mathew Kurtz July 24th, 2006, 10:51 AM I notice the same thing with Sharpen. If the effect itself is checked off in your effects window, even if the value is 0, it will still apply some sharpening to the video. I just uncheck the effect if I don't want any at all, or remove the effect altogether.
Hope this is what you mean.
Douglas Spotted Eagle July 24th, 2006, 12:04 PM Same answer. Digibeta, Beta SP, Beta SX...same answer.
Seth Bloombaum July 24th, 2006, 06:40 PM Also, do all version of V5 support HDV? I have a JVCHD100.
HDV resolutions are supported with Vegas 5, but it does not come with an HD codec or capture tool. When 5 was current product, Sony recommended purchase of Cineform's ConnectHD to fill in the missing pieces. There are other capture tools; the Cineform codec has proven itself to be a top performer.
Vegas 6 is of course remarkably similar to 5, but includes a Sony capture app, and the Cineform codec. 6 is the current version.
David Bird July 24th, 2006, 07:20 PM I am bringing still images into my project (over a still background image) and using the pan/crop tool to resize. When I move an image to the right (still in pan/crop) it starts disappearing behind the background image. If I keep moving to the right it will disappear entirely.
Assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - David Bird
Ryan King July 24th, 2006, 07:51 PM this happens to me all the time.. I have'nt figured out exactly how I get it to work.. I know that if I put it on the very top track, it will ussualy stop doing this, so it must have somthing to do with compositing.
Edward Troxel July 24th, 2006, 09:05 PM Open Pan/Crop, right-click the window, and choose "Match Output Aspect".
Ryan King July 24th, 2006, 09:16 PM wow.. this is really got me stumped.. I got this whole commercial done and I cant render it. well, I can render everything but that swish avi, that I have re-dumped from other conversetion programs five times.. why would vegas play a avi and allow me to edit it, but leave the track out on render?
Peter Diamond July 24th, 2006, 10:45 PM I appreciate all the responses. I'm open to more suggestions and explanations.
Thank you.
Zdravko Jancevski July 25th, 2006, 03:10 AM I use "Blufftitler" to create titling efect, saving AVI file then I open it in Vegas where in it's properties I select Alpha channel from "None" to "Premultiplied(dirty) "and it's work, title is appear overlay to main clip .
I use same process with AVI file that I made with "Particle illusion" but I can't
make same overlay effect. What is the problem? I only can get overlay when in Compositing mode I select "Lighten" but overlay effect is not so clear.
Any sugestions?
Regards.
David Bird July 25th, 2006, 06:45 AM Edward...works for me. It's amazing how much I DON'T know about this program.
Regards - db
Gary Franks July 25th, 2006, 07:44 AM A lot of it comes down to your burner, Media type, and Player.
DVD-R is a more Universal friendly format, but also beware of what maker of the media you use. Some players can't read generic media, so you have to spend money on quality stuff (Taiyo Yuden).
I myself never import footage into architech I just render to AVI and then open it in Arch... It seems to work better. However, I would try using a DVD-R anything labeled FUJI made in Japan is Taiyo Yuden and is solid media that plays in just about every player in the world.
Douglas Spotted Eagle July 25th, 2006, 07:45 AM I'd guess you're not outputting a 32bit avi from Particle Illusion. You need 32bit files so that they contain the transparency/alpha.
Gary Franks July 25th, 2006, 07:54 AM thank you....the part of the problem is that I'm editing on a smaller than ideal LCD screen that only allows me to view portions of the software - which is why the text preview screen was hidden....I need a 27" LCD SCREEN and I'd be happy!!! :-)
Change your screen resolution. I have edited in Vegas on 17" LCD WS, 17" LCD and 19" LCD and I see everything. You need to use a minimum of 1024x768 when using vegas.
Douglas Spotted Eagle July 25th, 2006, 08:13 AM I myself never import footage into architech I just render to AVI and then open it in Arch... It seems to work better..
Gary, while this may be true for you, you'll virtually *always* get a better encode using Vegas vs DVD Architect. Additionally and more importantly, encoding from the timeline preserves most of the color sampling of any media you may have used outside of DV-acquired media such as graphics, titles, 32bit overlays, etc.
You are correct that media plays a huge role in compatibility, and using off-the-Walmart-shelf media can set you up for problems. Using TY or other high-grade DVDs is the better option.
Ken Plotin July 25th, 2006, 09:32 AM Try exporting a Targa still sequence from PI. Save the alpha channel with the image and you're good to go.
Hope this helps.
Ken
David Delaney July 25th, 2006, 01:50 PM Scrap that, figured it out. I was trying to use a DV project for HD.
Now, for the FX1, what do I use for the project settings? It is FX1 NTSC 60i camera that I am using, but I noticed that I can set up a project for 1440 or 1920 - how do I tell which one I have used in the camera?
Douglas Spotted Eagle July 25th, 2006, 01:54 PM which version of Vegas are you using?
Kevin Richard July 25th, 2006, 03:53 PM This may just be one of those "that's just how it works" things but it still bothers me so I must ask.
How come Vegas can "JKL" up to 4x speed and zip along.. but if you do a speed up via properties/playback rate or a velocity envelope then "oh no" you must render it and it plays back choppy?
Anyone have any advice on settings to make sure are right for best playback rate (preview wise)... I know it's largely (mostly) a cpu thing... just wondering if I'm missing something or click something wrong.
Ryan King July 25th, 2006, 05:13 PM I GOT IT WORKING!! it seems you can't play a uncompressed avi from swish (you have to use a codec) in vegas, and the ones I was re-dumping through converters where not allowing me to render it in vegas although it would play.. to make a logn story short, I dump uncompressed avi out of swish, then us RAD VideoTools (a free converter) to re-dump as uncompressed again..never loose quality and vegas sems to play and render it fine.
Brian Luce July 26th, 2006, 01:13 AM If I buy a second hand copy of vegas is the license transferrable? Am I breaking the rules and being naughty?
I once bought a second hand version for Film FX and it easily transferred and i even got tech support from the manufacturer.
Mark Bryant July 26th, 2006, 02:58 AM Yes, you are allowed to buy/sell the software. See the EULA:
http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/support/eula.asp
Specifically:
5. ASSIGNMENT. You may assign the Software to a third party only if they agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of this Agreement. If you assign the Software, your rights under this Agreement will terminate immediately and you must: (a) cease all use of the Software, (b) permanently delete all copies of the Software from the computer on which it has been installed, and (c) deliver the original Software to the transferee, You may not retain the original or any copies of the Software.
Edward Troxel July 26th, 2006, 08:20 AM JKL simply is jumping greater distances on the timeline - it's not CHANGING the timeline. Velocity Envelope and Playback Rate both change the timeline.
Stuart Dawkins July 26th, 2006, 09:47 AM I apologize for an easy one. Help files were unhelpful.
If I want to apply an effect to a portion of an event (e.g., 5 seconds of a 20 second video clip), is there an easy way to select that portion of the event I wish to change and apply the effect without (a) having to slice at the edges of the 5 second portion to creat a mini-event, or (b) apply key frames to hold the other, noneffected portions constant?
Seth Bloombaum July 26th, 2006, 09:56 AM No, those are the two methods Vegas provides.
Are you having issues with these methods? If so, perhaps there are some workflow suggestions forum contributors could provide.
For example, applying the same efx to a series of clips by moving them to a dedicated track and using track-level efx, or copy and paste attributes... depending on what it is you need to do.
Stuart Dawkins July 26th, 2006, 09:59 AM I appreciate the reply. I'm not having trouble so much as getting used to keyframing in Vegas. I'm an After Effects guy and Vegas has a different feel in this regard. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious. Thanks again.
Kevin Richard July 26th, 2006, 11:03 AM Thanks Edward, I knew there was probably a logical reason... just wasn't sure what it was... still seems like for preview purposes it could be told to basically do the same ;) but maybe it is trying but has to read the instructions to do so every time which slows it all down.
OT: I just monitored my HD Read Bytes/Sec and even with 5 full DV tracks running with audio (yes it was a concophony but just testing) I was only seeing about 4MB/Sec being read.... is that correct? if that is the case then HD raids seem way less important than cpu power and we have a long way to go before worring about HD speed and transfer before cpu.
