Edward Troxel March 1st, 2005, 11:35 AM Right-click the first one and choose "Select Events to End".
Right-click the first one and choose Channels - Right Only (or Left Only)
Select Track 4 and press V. Adjust the volume as needed. If you adjust both the track AND volume envelope, you can get +12 on the track and +6 on the volume envelope. Of course you'll be raising "noise" by that much too.
Ian Slessor March 1st, 2005, 12:10 PM Thanks Ed for the info.
One thing.
I have each dance saved as a separate file. It appears that this is going to require me to dump all 49 dances onto one timeline but by the time I do that I could just do what you suggested above 49 times. *sigh*
Any ideas on streamlining what I've created for myself?
sincerely,
ian
Paul Jason March 1st, 2005, 02:28 PM When updating Vegas, Do I have to download each update ( A, B, C, D and so on ) to get all the updated features/fixes or can I just update to version 5.0d and it will have all the updates that were included in b and c.
The reason for asking is I have 5.0b and I can't seem to find 5.0c. I must have missed it. :-/
Thanks for the replies!
Edward Troxel March 1st, 2005, 03:22 PM The latest update is the FULL product (including all incremental updates). In fact, if Vegas was NOT installed on the system, you could just install the "D" update and register it and be running.
Edward Troxel March 1st, 2005, 03:23 PM Adjust the audio LAST. Then you only have to do it once.
Michael Zehnich March 1st, 2005, 04:03 PM Hi there. I'm trying to sync the beat of a song with a part of the movie, and I'm doing it quite a bit - so it'd be a much larger hassle to individually stop-and-go keyframe each beat.
It'd be MUCH easier if I could somehow get the cursor to actually move WITH the movie, instead of just going where to where the movie is when paused/stop, and being able to insert keyframes as it goes.
Is this possible? Thanks in advance!
Edward Troxel March 1st, 2005, 04:28 PM Not exactly sure I followed all of that. One thing you can do when playing the timeline is press "M" on the beats which will insert markers. Then you could use the markers to easily locate where the keyframes should go.
Michael Zehnich March 1st, 2005, 04:48 PM Ah, that works great! Never thought about that, strangely! I guess it's because I never really organize my work with markers and such, I prefer to just selectively zoom.
Thanks so much :)
Paul Jason March 1st, 2005, 05:14 PM Thanks so much Edward! I was wondering if it was like that but thought I would ask just to make sure.
Glenn Chan March 1st, 2005, 07:08 PM You could assign the audio to seperate buses and pan the buses and adjust the volume that way?
Philippe Gosselin March 1st, 2005, 07:50 PM Hi Shane
Well that is another way to do it then , I will try it and see which is fastest. I actually found the solution to the jumping frame problem , where the first frame of the new clip would be different than the last one in the last event even though both event are set to 0 velocity.
The answer is ridiculously simple , it's all an illusion because when I put my preview screen to full the last and first frame of both event are the same , it is only when it is in draft mode that there ise a difference.
After rendering it it is still the same frame so might be a slight bug I guess.
Thanks for all you input
John post your intro , i'd love to see what combustion can do :)
Phil
Peter Jefferson March 1st, 2005, 08:41 PM combustion is good, but rather slow when it comes to processing and rendering.. its particle generator is directly ripped out of Particle Illusion (it IS the same engine and they dont hide the fact) but PI is much faster.. ie realtime
with regard to teh still.. the suggestion of taking a screen grab is probably the best one.. i do this quite often.. slowing down to zero in Velo envelopes, then crossfading the still with the original footage which is running at 0% this alleviates interlace flicker or field based distortions
Philippe Gosselin March 1st, 2005, 08:47 PM Indeed I had to fight a bit with the flickering that occured between the two frames I was working with.
for sure I will keep that screenshot suggestion next time the need comes.
Thanks Peter
Tamim Azizadah March 1st, 2005, 09:19 PM Well, I'm not sure what the statistics are, but you can count me as one who has switched from Premiere to Vegas :) I wish Sony would promote this great software a little more because I really prefer it over Premiere. IMO Premiere's interface (and most Adobe products) has become too complicated without a good reason. And audio is so much easier to work with in Vegas.
Peter Jefferson March 2nd, 2005, 05:14 AM Avids not bad.. its actually really fuggin incredible once u learn it.. but dont start shooting Vegas and its so called inadeqacies of being an "unknown" product..
my clients are all "realtime this and realtime that.." using prem pro with either matrox or canopus HW.. but its funny how i see so many of them coming back experiencing soooo many problems..
they can have it as far as im concerned, and its funny how it took Adobe THIS long to get it right... and vegas is only up to 5 and has half the lifetime of Prem.. whats in version 6... well who knows.. but rest assured it wil be big...
hell even Edius is catching up REAL fast..
Premier... well to me.. realtime rendering doesnt make up for a boggy interface.. i liek prem pro and some of the things it can do.. but i can do much more with V5 in a quarter of the time..
Craig Forand March 2nd, 2005, 08:04 AM ok i know this is all about vegas, but i am also using dvd arch to build my dvd's. i have had a major problem with trying to burn dvds. I get the dvd set up the way i want but when i burn the dvd its the the wring data on the disk. it's the old dvd that i burned a few weeks back? help help may be i just need a walk through on how to set up what i want to burn... thanks
Ken Plotin March 2nd, 2005, 10:55 AM Craig,
DVDA opens with your last project in the timeline.
Click on the video folder in the upper right part of the screen (where the video and audio sources are listed). Navigate to the video and audio files you want to insert.
Then, after they are in the timeline use preview to make sure they're correct.
Under make DVD, prepare the file to a folder...different from your old one.
Hit burn DVD.
Should work.
Re-naming each version of a project differently can help in the future.
Hope this helps.
Ken
Douglas Spotted Eagle March 2nd, 2005, 12:19 PM Gentlemen (and ladies) start your NLE's! The VASST 10 second contest is on. Go to the VASST site for rules and information. http://www.vasst.com
Great prizes, great fun.
We took the recommendation of the forum and made the voting anonymous, so you'll be voting only on content. We also set it up so that you can upload your own vids rather than us screening them first.
Good luck!
Brent Marks March 2nd, 2005, 06:27 PM I know...Maybe a wild freakin' question...but...
Is there ANYWAY
Vegas5 apply filters from Photoshop to video?
THANKS
Don't beat down a playa:)
Emre Safak March 2nd, 2005, 09:07 PM You could export individual frames to Photoshop and apply an action to the lot then reassemble the frames...
Edward Troxel March 2nd, 2005, 09:45 PM Will WAX use those filters? I know Satish was looking into it at one time.
Glen Elliott March 2nd, 2005, 10:28 PM Obviously the only easy way to do this is use Premiere and export a clip as a "film-strip". I used to do this often back in the days of Premiere 6.0 to have access to a broader range of filters/effects. I was able to pull off some really neat results.
Now with Vegas I find no need to do so- it has all the tools I need to create.
Glenn Chan March 2nd, 2005, 10:39 PM If you have Quicktime Pro you can convert movie files to image sequences and back. From there you can use Photoshop's batch actions on the images. This is a very reasonable process, although it does take some button pushing to setup.
RAD Video Tools may also be able to convert movies into image sequences, and it's shareware.
2- I heard about Satish doing a filter like this, but I don't know the story on it.
Craig Forand March 2nd, 2005, 11:46 PM ken, i am using dvda 1 not dvda 2 so is that the same i dont see the video select in the top right conner. i select form the bottom of my screen. so i may just be dumb. thanks for the help.
Van Lam March 3rd, 2005, 12:12 AM Just render your video as an image sequence (a script is included with vegas), apply your filters, then import your images back in Vegas. Kind of a lenthy process, but I think that's the only way. (Sort of buying Boris)
Steve Roffler March 3rd, 2005, 12:48 AM None of the links respond when I browse into your site on my Mac with explorer. Probably an artifact of my still running OS9.
Do you have a direct link?
Thanks.
BTW, learned a lot from your training video on Vegas 4. Really got me going.
Douglas Spotted Eagle March 3rd, 2005, 08:08 AM http://www.vasst.com/contest.aspx?id=f1b1db3a-22f9-4e43-b45f-a91307068a0d will get you there directly.
Glad you liked the Vegas 4 vid. I'm assuming you're using a Mac to browse the web and editing on a PC?
Steve Roffler March 3rd, 2005, 08:36 AM Thanks for the link.
Yes, I have both a Mac and a PC. One of the main reasons I finally broke down and got a PC was so I could edit with Vegas and do Raw conversion of my photos with Capture one.
Plamen Petrov March 3rd, 2005, 09:14 AM Hello,
I really want to try Shake after reading some info for the program. I red that the last version for Windows is Shake 2.51, but there is not a place or link for download trial, even on Apple official site. Does somebody know a working link?
Boyd Ostroff March 3rd, 2005, 09:55 AM According to Apple's website, the currently shipping versions of Shake (3.5) only run under MacOS X or Linux: http://www.apple.com/shake/specs.html
Maybe some vendors still have copies of the Windows version in stock? I'm not sure that there is a demo however. I found these on Google, but they appear to be related to the Mac version, and they also indicate that the demo versions no longer exist...

Ken Plotin March 3rd, 2005, 11:55 AM I'm also using DVDA1.
The area I'm referring to is under "Media Properties"; the blue film like icon.

Kevin Kimmell March 3rd, 2005, 03:55 PM I've been rendering quite a bit lately as we prepare our final screenings and am wondering at what point it's best to deal with the MPEG Encoding.
Initially I was rendering to uncompressed AVI in Vegas and letting DVDA handle the compression. Now it seems that Rendering to MPEG from within Vegas would be the better option since I can customize the render more.
How do some of you handle this? If I have several segments in different VEG files that I will end up putting together for a final render, should I render them all as MPEG and then do the final render as MPEG as well? If so, does it even bother re-encoding?
Thanks,
Kevin
Edward Troxel March 3rd, 2005, 04:07 PM The basic answer to your question is: Rendering to MPEG2 comes LAST.
Generally speaking, here's how I handle it:
I will build my project in pieces. As each piece is built, I render to DV-AVI. Once all the pieces are completed, I'll create a "final" project assembling all the rendered pieces. Then I'll render that to MPEG2.
I do the rendering to MPEG2 in Vegas since, as you said, you have more control over the various settings.
If you wish to use Uncompressed AVI instead of DV-AVI, you'll have slightly less loss on the colors. You may or may not be able to notice the difference. I'd try both to see which you prefer.
Jan van den Hemel March 3rd, 2005, 08:48 PM Is there a way of deleting the empty space between two clips in Vegas? I mean, like the "ripple delete" function in Premiere and Final Cut.
Edward Troxel March 3rd, 2005, 09:05 PM Double-click the blank area. Press the DEL key. If the area does not close automatically, press "F" (Post - Ripple Edit)
To make sure it DOES close automatically, turn on Ripple Editing. However, I leave Ripple Editing off and use Post Ripple Editing instead.
Jan van den Hemel March 4th, 2005, 04:46 AM That's excellent, thanks a lot!
Hugh DiMauro March 4th, 2005, 10:49 AM Can I capture tapeless location footage via firewire onto a laptop hard drive using Vegas Capture in the same way one uses DV Rack?
Shannon Rawls March 4th, 2005, 11:58 AM Yes, you sure can. However, it will not slave to the camera as DV Rack does.
DV Rack is excellent for the "Slaving" function and gives you excellent results for sync timecode and 'no worries' type shooting. Also, you get all those other great functions in DV Rack as well.
- ShannonRawls.com
Edward Troxel March 4th, 2005, 12:36 PM Yes you can. The Vegas Capture utility will do this but will require that you manually start and stop it. Besides the alternative of DVRack, you might also look at Scenalyzer Live.
Jon Omiatek March 4th, 2005, 01:16 PM I currently use Vegas 5.0 with a dell workstation p4 3.4g 1gb ram and I network render sometimes with another pc with the same specs. It just takes so long to render 2 hours of footage.
Does anyone use Adobe Prem Pro, that has tried vegas as well. Before I make the investment in Adobe's product with hardware I was wanting to find out how they compared.
I edit just started editing in HDV, so both products will work with HDV. My question is really more about SD editing. Considering my HDV work is about 3% of my total editing time, SD being the largest part. Although, I bet that will change eventually. :)
Thanks,
Jon
John Hudson March 4th, 2005, 02:25 PM And I learn another cool thing from Edward.
I too rarely use Ripple but have to trun it on from time to time; this will save me some!
Thanks again!
Edward Troxel March 4th, 2005, 02:32 PM All three modes of ripple editing can be performed with variations of the "F" key. Just do a search for "Post Ripple" in the help file.
James Binder March 5th, 2005, 01:02 PM I need to export rather large sections of video into aftereffects for image stabilization...
Why can't I export as DV instead of uncompressed AVI? Am I losing resolution by doing so? DV is what they are now -- so why can't I just keep it that way?
The reason I ask is that the files are huge as uncompressed AVI.
If not DV, is there another alternative that will save some space?
Thanks --
Edward Troxel March 5th, 2005, 03:05 PM The short answer is no. However, uncompressed is probably your best option. And, yes, uncompressed is huge. You could try other codecs - including some of the DV ones, but the results will not be as good. You might also look at some others such as quicktime.
Another thing you could do is frameserve from Vegas to AE but you'll still have to render from AE into something to import back into Vegas. You'd only have ONE uncompressed file that way instead of TWO.
Kim Kinser March 5th, 2005, 06:11 PM what about huffyuv?
James Binder March 5th, 2005, 06:12 PM Thanks Edward -- I appreciate the info...
Andy Shrimpton March 5th, 2005, 07:31 PM Hi Edward!
I've been completing a project which I started in September, using excalibur.
It's a 3 Cam shoot, and I've selected all the shots I want to use.
I then rendered out, after removing the PIP, but there are occasional scenes where the PIP is visible in the rendered file. Is there any way I can get rid of this, or stop it happening?
One thought I had was that:
I did the credit roll, and intro, seperately, then added them to the time line where I had the multicam set up, as AVI files. Should I have rendered out the multicam veg then added all 3 avi's (Start, 3 Cam, and credits, then rendered as MPEG 2?
Thanks for your help.
Andy
Edward Troxel March 5th, 2005, 08:04 PM Sounds like you manually moved those events to the Master track. If you do that, you have to remove the Pan/Crop settings on those events. Open Pan/Crop on those events and reset it back to the default settings.
John Hartney March 6th, 2005, 12:34 AM I use them both, but don't understand your question.
Jon Omiatek March 6th, 2005, 02:34 AM Basically my question is this, I love Vegas but it takes entirely too long to render the final project. Will Prem pro with hardware card give me realtime? Even with text, croping, and etc. If so, then I will use both packages. When I have all night to render, I will use Vegas. When I am in hurry, something else.... whatever that might be....
I am hoping my answer is adobe prem pro 1.5 with hardware acceleration. I use adobe after effects on regular basis and the idea of not having to go thru the hastle of exporting to avi and importing into ae is almost worth trying prem pro.
Thank You,
Jon
