Kevin Kwak March 27th, 2005, 11:28 PM Hello, In Vegas5, is there a way to increase the bass only for audio music? Thank you in advance. Brent Marks March 27th, 2005, 11:33 PM Hey guys... I am on a deadline with this weekly tv show I am producing.. Our first show is coming up on air... SOON! And I am having stupid -shit-ass-trouble! I am using connectHD to capture to m2t then converting to the .avi form to work with its alot faster and more responsive that way... (in the big file .avi) I am editing using Vegas5.d The video and audio are becoming out of sync... Can anyone give me any ideas on how to fix this??? Time is of an essence! thanks for taking YOUR time to help me. Shooting in HDV with Sony Hdr-FX1 Editing on Dell Poweredge 400sc with 2 gigs ram 2 terrabytes of storage Glenn Chan March 28th, 2005, 12:02 AM Use the track EQ. In the left hand column, click on the track effects button (it's green and looks like a rectangle in a chain.) You should see track EQ in the top of the menu that comes up. Click on the 1 and drag it up a little until it reads 3dB or so. 2- Make sure you are monitoring on something accurate. On poor equipment that cannot reproduce the low-end well you may be tempted to boost the bass too much. It may also have exaggerated bass and treble. In the deepest frequencies your speakers may be very quiet (possibly with distortion or lack of detail), the frequencies above them will be exaggerated (too loud), then you have the mids, and you should be able to figure out the rest. G. Lee Gordon March 28th, 2005, 12:20 PM I just have the basic Quicktime that came with the computer. Do you have to have Quicktime's authoring features to be able to save a Quicktime file from Vegas 5 to your hard drive? Edward Troxel March 28th, 2005, 12:58 PM Vegas requires the authoring components to properly use QT, Tiff, and some other formats. Just install QT again and install everything listed under "custom". Joe Carney March 28th, 2005, 01:31 PM I know someone having problems integrating the M-Audio 410 into Vegas. They can't seem to get each track assigned correctly for surround sound editing. Has anyone here had experience setting it up and using it? Thanks in advance btw, I'm assuming ASIO would be the preferred interface? Bob Costa March 28th, 2005, 03:49 PM I just want to check my thought process. I am already working on this project, but if anyone can point out easier/better, I will appreciate it (for now or next time). I have some interview footage with 2-3 camera clips and 1 long audio clip from my iRiver/AT897. About 30 different interviews and 25 minutes of total footage. I was interviewing guests at the dinner table during a party. Before I start editing, I need to merge the two. 1. Add audio and video to timeline, sync up the two audio tracks, mute the camera audio, and render as an AVI (uncompressed default) file to lock audio to video. 2. Use that file as input for next stage, where I need to apply FX (mostly brightness and contrast), a bit of framing (I didn't test wide angle with MKE300 mic attached), and then chop it up into short clips. I will create subclips out of this. 3. Assemble the subclips. Wonder if anyone would do it differently or use different settings for intermediate AVI file ?? Most all of the cubclips will need the same brightness adjustment. Would you do that before the intermediate render or will I lose info by doing it too early? Edward Troxel March 28th, 2005, 04:21 PM 1. Add audio and video to timeline, sync up the two audio tracks, mute the camera audio, and render as an AVI (uncompressed default) file to lock audio to video. Adding and syncing fine. Rendering is really not necessary but you can do that. However, if you DO render, there's no need to render as uncompressed. Since you're starting with DV, render to DV (i.e. NTSC DV or PAL DV) 2. Use that file as input for next stage, where I need to apply FX (mostly brightness and contrast), a bit of framing (I didn't test wide angle with MKE300 mic attached), and then chop it up into short clips. I will create subclips out of this. 3. Assemble the subclips. This is fine. You'll be slightly better off applying the FX AFTER the first render (which really copies since you're not changing anything). While the intermediate render is not strictly necessary, I can see how it can help you with the organization of your project. Bob Costa March 28th, 2005, 06:56 PM Thanks ed. The problem I think I have is that after combining the iRiver audio, I will be chopping up and shuffling the interviews quite a bit. It seemed like this was the only way to do it. Trying to manage grouping of an alternate audio track looks hard. Or is there a way to lock teh audio so that trimming cutting keeps everything in sync? And thanks for the heads up about rendering DV format. Glenn Chan March 28th, 2005, 07:59 PM This might work better: Throw all three cams and the iriver audio onto timeline. Sync them up. (Slating at the shoot helps.) Right click the audio (in timeline), select "create subclip". Right click the audio, select show in media pool. Right click the audio clip IN THE MEDIA POOL, DRAG and hover over the VIDEO clip. Select audio --> add as takes. The audio should now be 'embedded' in the video clip with synced audio. Rinse and repeat for the other two cameras. 2- Right click the video track and select "Media FX". You can apply exposure correction this way, and it will affect all clips based off that media. 3- If the MKE330/wide angle is an issue, you can drop cookie cutter onto Media FX too. Or if you want to render it out, include the color correction. When bringing the footage back in, add it as a take to existing video. G. Lee Gordon March 28th, 2005, 11:44 PM I downloded QT again. Does it have to be QT PRO or are the authoring features available on the regular free version of QT? Edward Troxel March 29th, 2005, 08:19 AM You do NOT need QT Pro. Just install the STANDARD QT, choose "Custom" as the install type, and pick everything. G. Lee Gordon March 29th, 2005, 10:11 AM Hey, I purchased Quicktime Pro & problem solved. Thanks for all the help. Mitch Buss March 29th, 2005, 01:14 PM I had a plug-in for auto color correction, I believe it was Mike Crash or something like that, but I just had to format my computer and lost it. Can anyone direct me to the link to get that particular plug-in or something similar to it? Thanks again. MITCH Edward Troxel March 29th, 2005, 01:28 PM The Mike Crash tools can be found here: http://mikecrash.wz.cz/ There's also the 6cc (six vector color corrector) tool here: http://www.moosehill.se/vegas/ I'm not sure which one you're referring to. Chris Trainor March 29th, 2005, 08:37 PM for my job i often have to make little slideshows in vegas 5. i wanted to make it is automated and uniformed as possible. i see in the preferences where you can change the amount of time a new still is displayed, and i changed it from 5 seconds to ten. my question is: how can i tell vegas i want it to automatically space each new image? basically, is there a way that everytime i enter a new image it is automatically crossfaded into the next? by default, it spaces them one after the other. i would like them to automatically be crossfaded say 1 sec everytime i insert a new image. also, what about automatically matching the output aspect? is that possible? is there a better app for making these simple little slideshows? Edward Troxel March 29th, 2005, 09:54 PM On the same tab in Preferences is an "automatically overlap" checkbox and you can enter the amount of the overlap. However, If you're doing "Ken Burns" style movements, I don't like to do that. I have the procedure I use written up in Vol 1 #8 of my newsletter. If you want to really automate the process, you can use the tools built into Excalibur/Neon and/or Ultimate S to build a slide show for you. David Mintzer March 29th, 2005, 10:30 PM I have tried both and since Ed's came first I use it the most. Ultimate S is a bit more powerful but either way you can't go wrong. Glenn Gipson March 29th, 2005, 10:59 PM I can't seem to figure out how to do a freeze frame on my video. I read about the Velocity envelope, but I can't get this to freeze my video up as it plays. Can somebody give me some suggestions on how to do a freeze frame? Thanks. Chris Trainor March 29th, 2005, 11:08 PM thanks! Glenn Gipson March 30th, 2005, 06:52 AM Ahh, never mind, I got it. I was simply bending the velocity envelope all the way down, thinking that would freeze it, instead of paying attention to the velocity numbers. Edward Troxel March 30th, 2005, 09:29 AM An easy way to make sure you have a freeze frame it to right-click the node, choose "Set to..." and type in 0. Otherwise you may be "close" to zero but not exactly and experience a slight "drift". David Ennis March 30th, 2005, 11:37 AM Why does my .avi display partially letterboxed in WinDVD, while the rendered .mpg displays full screen? They're both 720 x 480. I've tried a search on "avi aspect ratio" but the hits that came up seem to center on 16:9 and 24p. Dan Euritt March 30th, 2005, 12:19 PM the real question might be, does your .avi show up as letterboxed in the vegas editor window, windows media player, etc. Emre Safak March 30th, 2005, 12:21 PM Short answer: when you render set Pixel aspect ratio to 1.0 and Frame size to NTSC Square Pixel (under File>Render>Custom>Video) Long answer: The AVI extension merely indicates the file format, not the codec, and not all codecs have or use an aspect ratio tag. In fact, I know of no popular codec that actually does respect the aspect ratio, so I always use square pixels when I am not rendering to MPEG-2. A video container may be compatible with many video and audio codecs, so being able to play one AVI file in no way guarantees being able to play another. Jan van den Hemel March 30th, 2005, 06:48 PM I always just copy/paste the last frame until i've got enough freeze frame time... Ray Sigmond March 30th, 2005, 07:43 PM Get your creative juices flowing at the April 5th meeting of the New York Sony Vegas user group. I'll be there and at B&H tomorrow (Thursday April 1st) Ray Sigmond March 30th, 2005, 08:32 PM Hi Glen: I am going to try to make it to the WEVA Town Meeting. The Next Generation: Preparing for the Transition to High-Definition Wedding & Event Videography which starts at 3:30 looks hot, but I will not be able to get there that early. In this information-packed workshop, experience the future--HDV! See actual footage from a wedding shot with Sony’s new HDV Pro camcorder and learn how your business can make a smooth and cost-effective transition from SD to HD/HDV. Also see how Sony's high-powered Vegas Video nonlinear editing system can assist in this evolution to high-definition widescreen video production. http://www.wevainstitute.com/programmingdetail.asp?cityID=1 Brian Handler March 30th, 2005, 11:18 PM Hey guys I just aquired Vegas 5.0 and I'm currently running my editor with Premiere pro. There are a few little things that Vegas can do (at least easily) that premiere can't so I'd like to have the abilty to run it if need be. What are the pros and cons of having both systems installed on the same editor? Thanks guys. John Hartney March 31st, 2005, 01:05 AM I use them both on a P4 3.0 2-gigs of ram using a standard ohci card without any problems. They both feed an Ikegami monitor that has two s-video inputs to monitor ntsc. Vegas uses the firewire>sony dsr20>svideo out, and I have premiere set with a Matrox Pahrlia card with s-video out for realtime preview.. The Matrox card also gives wysiwyg with After Effects pro, which is a real time saver.. So, I just A/B the monitor depending on which app I using. I also use the full Sony current versions of production suite with vegas, soundforge, acid pro, dvd arch, along side the Adobe Pro productiction suite 2.5 which is premere pro, audition, encore, and after effects. Haven't found any big problems. Burk Webb March 31st, 2005, 02:05 AM I've been doing some extensive trouble shooting and, for me, Vegas 5d's mpeg 2 encoder is not a happy camper. I can't render to mpeg 2 for any length of time (about 240 megs) without an error message popping up: "An error occurred while creating the media file ____________.mpg. The reason for the error could not be determined." - thus I can't render to HDV m2t to export back to the Sony Z1 - in Vegas 5d. I can do it in Vegas 5b...Just trying to find out if it's just me or are other people having any trouble? Thanks a bunch for any info, Yoyodyne Steve Roffler March 31st, 2005, 08:26 AM I'm using Vegas 5d (build 194) and haven't had any trouble rendering to mpeg2. I usually render to DV AVI first and then to mpeg2 but I have also gone directly to mpeg2 with no problems. The longest file I rendered was about 50 min long. Edward Troxel March 31st, 2005, 08:30 AM First, I would check where all of your various file locations are pointing and verify you have enough space in all of those locations. There are several file locations to change in both File - Properties and Options - Preferences. They all default to drive C. Bryan Roberts March 31st, 2005, 09:30 AM Hey all - well hopefully I can figure this problem out quickly. Yesterday I went to visit the parents and was going to wipe my mom's HD clean (it had win 98 on it still) and do a fresh install of Win2K and give her my old copy of Vegas 4 because she was interested in trying out some editing. So, we saved all of her important information and before hand, I ran the Win2k install CD on my machine to setup the four floppy boot discs for her install. I then restarted in Dos mode on her 98 machine and did a format of her c drive. Everything went fine but when I restarted with the first boot disc in, I received a weird message: I/O error, invalid disk. I also tried to restart with no boot discs and received a "non system disc or invalid disc, please enter new disc" which I think is normal since its wiped clean. I've done several clean installs of OSs with this same technique and no problems. Is it just that my boot disc was bad for some reason? (they were brand new floppies out of a box). Please someone help me as my mom is out a computer right now, and is not that happy :( Edward Troxel March 31st, 2005, 09:43 AM Sounds like there's an error on the first floppy. Just re-create that floppy. I've gotten to the point where I hate floppys. I can take a brand new floppy, copy a 5k file to it, carry it to another machine, and that machine can't read it. I feel I can't rely on them anymore. Can't you just boot from the CD? Bryan Roberts March 31st, 2005, 12:00 PM I thought it might be the boot disks, damn - Unfortunately I can't boot from the CD as it's an older machine before you could boot from CD's - Win2k is also designed to work from boot disks on clean installs- The question is, will a floppy hold up if i mail it to her (in state but still). Edward Troxel March 31st, 2005, 12:50 PM Make and send two or three of each one. Surely then she can make a complete set. Jon Omiatek March 31st, 2005, 04:11 PM Anyone use the ADS PYRO A/V Link to preview on a TV with Vegas? I was going to buy it if it will work. Saves the wear and tear on my camera and or deck. Thanks, Jon Edward Troxel March 31st, 2005, 04:23 PM It should work fine. However, I just use my deck. If you have a deck, I really see no reason to use this. If you only have a camera, I *CAN* see a reason to use this. Jon Omiatek March 31st, 2005, 04:27 PM I edit at my day job as well. Hauling in my sony deck is no fun. The only reason to haul in the deck is for a tv preview. This would be a cheap solution. Thanks for the quick response. I am going to go buy one now. Thanks, Jon Brian Kennedy March 31st, 2005, 04:33 PM I had heard that you can set Vegas such that dragging the end of an event would repeat the last frame, rather than re-starting the clip. I haven't been able to get this to work -- whenever I drag either end of a video clip, the clip is repeated (and Vegas puts a notch at the repeat point). Perhaps I'm missing the option that holds the first / last frame when you extend the clip in either direction? I think it would be a useful option, because then you could just split the event where you want the freeze frame and easily extend as long as you wanted. I find using the velocity envelope a little more difficult to get right because the out point is by time, rather than by frame -- so if you have your out point set, but then put a velocity envelope on the clip, you have to redo the out point again. Maybe it's just me -- I am still a newbie with this stuff. Danny Santos March 31st, 2005, 04:50 PM While watching the video I took in a dancing ballroom I noticed that there are some slight grain on my video. Yes, the lighting on the dance floor was not ideal and very dark. I was using a 10 watt light but I guess it was not enough. Any suggestions how I can fix and possibly remove the grainess? I am very new in Vegas 5 and any help is surely appreciated. In the future, any recommendations on how I can shoot better on a low light room without blinding those people who are dancing? Thanks. Tony Rockliff March 31st, 2005, 05:24 PM Yes, I use it with a Panasonic video monitor and it works very well. Don Bloom March 31st, 2005, 07:41 PM To answer in reverse order; Depends on what you're shooting with. Even a 20W light isn't "blinding" in most cases so you can turn up the juice a little OR if you're shooting with a camera with adjustable gian, say like a PD150 or 170, you can set the gain up to about 6 or 9 and still be good. Over that and it can be a bit touchy. As for removing grain in post with Vegas, Mike Crash has a denoiser program that works pretty well. Its free and small and does a good job. I'm sorry but I can't recall his website off hand but I believe it has been posted here before in a thread or 2. I think he's out of the UK (could be wrong) so his site is mikecrash(something).UK (I think) Sorry 'bout that. I'll look for the url and if I find it I'll post it for you. Don Edward Troxel March 31st, 2005, 08:11 PM If it is truly the LAST frame in the clip (not the event) then you can just drag it as long as needed with looping turned off and the last frame will be repeated. If it's NOT the last frame, my preferred method is the velocity envelope. Edward Troxel March 31st, 2005, 08:14 PM Jon, if you're having to carry it back and forth between places, then I can see how it would be better than a deck. It should do you a good job. Kevin James March 31st, 2005, 08:17 PM I'm trying to have a video clip fall through the frame. I have movement in X axis locked, but after I set the begininng adn ending key frames, it still drifts out right after the start of movement. Any ideas why it might be doing this? Edward Troxel March 31st, 2005, 08:21 PM First of all, make sure the "smoothness" setting for all keyframes is set to 0 (default is 100). Next, make sure you don't have any EXTRA keyframes. Kevin James March 31st, 2005, 09:14 PM I have already entered a number of keyframes, I need to change two tracks worth of keyframes to 0 smoothness, is there any quick way to force that for the duration of the whole track? |
