Photoshop instructions, which show you "stepwise" sepia toning:
http://www.photo.net/photo/sepia/index

You might just want to check it out even if you don't plan on using Photoshop, because they use multiple tones for the sepia look (and that looks better).

I have a sequence that I've created and when I inserted the video I deleted the audio track. Is there any way to get it back without having to re-insert it?

Thanks guys!

I am trying to burn an audio CD using Vegas. WHenever I click on any CD options (including CD tab in preferences) system just hangs while it looks for CD drives. I have two different CD drives that are recognized by every other program but Vegas. WHen I click on burn track at once it does the same thing. The project file has one MP3 file as source, broken into 4 tracks, but I doubt that matters.

Any clues? Or is there a better way to burn an audio CD using Vegas (or Soundforge or Nero) ? SHould I be doing some kind of rendering and then a different program to burn, like I have to do with DVDs?

If you're saying that you want to get back the audio that belongs to a video event, then, yes, Excalibur's Orphan Wizard does just that (and visa versa too).

I figured it out

Right click on the event, open in trimmer, double click event, select audio only, drag to timeline.

Hope this helps!

I've heard that VirtualDub plug-ins are compatible with Vegas 5. Is it true, and how to use them in Vegas? For example, I downloaded DESHAKER plug-in for VirtualDub, which is compatible with Vegas as I red somewhere. So?

Hi

Yeah I loaded the clip into vegas media pool, right clicked properties and the rate is set to 50 frames. problem is the drop down menu used to change it is greyed out. I use D-VHS to capture so I have tried capturing from all over the place. Need to know how to change that frame rate down to 25.

Edward Troxel

Many (but not all) can be used by loading them in the WAX plugin available at http://www.debugmode.com. You can also use the Frameserve software at the same location to frameserve to VirtualDub.

That will work. The method Gary mentioned is faster and easier, though.

You're right, Edward. Is there anything that Excalibur can't do?

So you're saying when you go to Tools - Preferences you can't click on the "CD Settings" tab?

If that is the case, you may need to contact Technical Support to see if they can help.

Do I need anything special or will Vegas recognize the camera and start importing the MPEG TS on its own? Thanks a lot.

Nope, Vegas currently cannot capture m2t streams. You'll need either DVHS, which is available all over the web (the VASST site has a link to an English version), or you can get Cineform Connect HD, which will capture the m2t stream and convert it to an .avi for best editing experience in Vegas.

I know there are a couple of keyboards available with Vegas keys. I don't have any links handy but seem to remember that some were stick-on keycodes where others were actually imprinted. I've never used one of the Vegas keyboards (which are really just regular keyboards with differently labeled keys).

I also remember that one of the keyboards had the "ALT" and "Windows" keys reversed for some reason. Many people were complaining about that.

I am running 1 1/2 GIG of RAM and frequently when I go to RAM Render the process starts and stops a split second later. It fails to render the entire selection.

I notice this when the demand on the rendering process is greater however I would not suspect that at these times I would be using more than the allotment of RAM I have apportioned to Vegas, which is the Max.

Can anyone tell me why this happens and if there is a cure?

Edward Troxel

Grazie discovered this problem and we found a solution:

Either CLOSE the Pan/Crop dialog you have open OR turn OFF Sync Cursor. (May have been Track Motion but I'm thinking it was Pan/Crop)

Once you get the transport streams captured, you can then drop them right on the Vegas timeline. You may need to rename the files from *.ts to *.mpg, or when trying to import files, in the file selector box you may have to tell it to look for files named *.ts in order for them to show up.

As Douglas said, you need to use something like DVHS or Cineform to actually capture the footage from the camera, as that's the part that Vegas doesn't support yet. As for editing, Vegas can do that itself, or you can use Cineform to transcode the footage into a more-responsive edit-ready format.

Also, be sure to update to Vegas 5.0d, which includes updates that let you render out HDV-compatible transport streams. Then you can use Cineform to output those files back to tape for viewing on your HDTV.

My first attempt in creating a playable music cd failed. The music plays but all the songs are in one track, so I can not skip tracks. :/ And before waisting a 2nd cd-r...

1) Once you put all the tracks in the timeline, is it Track-At-Once or Disc-At-Once?
2) And is there anything else you need to do in the timeline besides placing all the media in the timeline and Tools->Burn CD?

Thank you.

Edward Troxel

Use "N" to create CD Tracks.

I always burn "Disc at once"

From the help file (to help speed up the CD track creation process)
From the Tools menu, choose Lay Out Audio CD from Events to automatically create a CD layout for a disc-at-once audio CD. The CD layout bar is displayed and track regions are added.

Kevin,
Yes, there is more to do before you burn the CD.

Once you have all your audio tracks you need to double click each audio event/track event at its beginning and press N. A flag will come up above the event that will say, "Track 1", or "Track 2", etc. That will let you do the skipping around to different tracks once the CD is burned.

I think there is an automatic feature in Vegas 5 that will put the index points in for you. I'm a little foggy on this but I think it is,
TOOL > LAY OUT AUDIO CD FROM EVENTS. There is a catch though and this is why I don't use this feature. If you have events that overlap then Vegas won't put the marker in, that happened to me so I just do the "N" thing myself and that has worked without any problem.

I also mark the In point and the Out point of whatever I am going to burn but this may not be necesary.

Finally, I use the Disc-at Once burn and that has worked fine for me. Oh yes, with the Disc-at-Once you need to have exactly 2 seconds of dead space or silence at the beginning of the first track or you will get an error message.

Other than that, burning a CD is pretty straight forward. I have compiled quite a few CDs now of interviews and some music using Vegas 5 and they have all worked without any problem.

Hope this helps. Nick

P.S. Edward beat me to it while I was trying to think the process through. You can't get any better advice than what Edward suggests.

PC Folks, the above tutorial is quite helpful in helping to realize a fast way to get your captured m2t's into the NLE timeline and apply effects, etc...

What's really crazy is you can combine this method with the frameserving out to Nero recode (see DSE's post re: frameserving - older topic) AT THE SAME TIME and save a whole whack of disk space... it seems to be faster, too...

I've been happy to edit m2t's natively in womble mpeg video wizard... it performs great on my sub-par HDV editing station...

Now I can frameserve full resolution m2t into Vegas or Premiere and quickly apply specialized effects like filters or color correction (ie. Magic Bullet Editors/Looks Suite), etc.

**Some important notes if you try the link above and follow the formula**

- re: dmgdec or whatever it's callled: read the "readme" re: transport streams after install - there's important notes there... use the "raw" detection method described...

- demux your audio rather than decode to wav in menu: only way to get mpa audio track for use in NLE extracted from m2t... wav doesn't seem to work...

This may be a good way to get your m2t's into After Effects...

Well, I just wanted to share something new - it works!

Enjoy, good luck...

Hello Troy,
Ive got exactly the same issue with my PD1, every editing / video app ive tried sees the footage as half the speed and half the length on the timeline. The only one that doesn't is the cheap piece of **** by KDDI Labs which comes with the camera, the only file you can output from this is an mpeg file, which also is at much lower bitrate with no options over compression quality or bitrate changing.

does anyone know whats up with the video files from this camera? Seems to me like its a 50fps file which is a 25fps video stream with each frame duplicated twice, but then you would assume you just need to delete the duplicate frames in your editing app or play it back at 200% to get rid of the unwanted frames, but you do this and the video stops halfway and plays back at 12.5 fps.

Anyone know of a way to get the HI-RES footage off the camera at 25fps and convert it to an avi/quicktime file?

Seems like someone must have asked but I can turn up anything in search:

Does it matter what order the video filters are applied? I usually add at least curves, color correction, HSL, and broadcast safe filters. I assume that the effects are produced sequentially so it seems that it may make a difference which order these are applied. Is there a prefered order?

Thanks.

Edward Troxel
March 15th, 2005, 09:36 PM
Actually, yes it DOES make a difference. Different orders can provide different results. What is the "right" order? Depends on the results you desire. :-)

Glenn Chan
March 16th, 2005, 12:53 AM
For color correction, the order I would use is:
Color corrector that fixes white balance
Color curves to fix exposure and/or film look; may introduce saturation shifts

Then:
Any looks/effects
Saturation adjust
Secondary color correction

Then:
?Color curves to map values from 0-255 into 16-235 range.?
Broadcast safe

What I started noticing in Vegas is that many filters assume 0 is black (whereas 16 should be black) and that with multiple filters you may run into problems with banding (from rounding error).

2- If you use masks, pay careful attention to whether or not your filters are applied before or after the mask. You can click on the little trianges at the bottom to adjust this.

Here’s the situation:

I have a two camera shoot/edit -- both cameras combined on the same video track.

I need to extract 1 of the 2 cameras footage from the single video track (where they are both currently combined), paste to a new track and apply color correction. Or more simply put, I need to separate the two cameras footage for color correction (independent of one another).

Right now, I am going down the line, one by one and dragging one of the cameras/video up to a new video track. There must be an easier way to do this! If this is a glaring newbie question, my apologies, I’ve searched the board and can’t find an answer…

I’d just go ahead and do it, but it’s a two hour and fifteen minute project!

Thanks for you help!

Edward Troxel
March 16th, 2005, 10:08 AM
Here's a better option:

1) Apply the color correction to the first event of that camera and get it correct.

2) Save that as a preset

3) Delete it from the first event

4) Apply that preset to that camera in the MEDIA POOL which will affect that camera no matter where it is on the timeline.

Alternately, once a preset has been created you can use the Apply Effects tool in Neon and tell it to apply the effect only to the clips that are of the same file as the first clip.

Edward --

Many thanks -- I've only been around this board a short while, and so far I’m thoroughly impressed with you vast knowledge of Vegas.

I'm going to go and try your suggestion right now -- and save myself hours of work! I didn't know that you could apply effects in the media pool -- very cool!

BTW – when you say ‘apply’ the preset to the camera in the media pool – do you mean to drag and drop the present to the file/camera?

Thanks again –

Edward Troxel
March 16th, 2005, 12:00 PM
Effects can be applied in multiple places. You can apply them to:

Event level
Track level
Project level (i.e. drop it on the preview screen)
Media Pool
Bus Track level

Vegas is very flexible.

I have all of this detailed in one of the newsletter issues.

So I'm using my trusty Sager notebook, with WinXP Pro for all my editing. It's nice and fast and really love it - thanks to all the people the recommended it.

BUT it really has a bunch of extra junk that comes up in the start menu and if I ever have to use Ctrl Alt Del, I see about 50 processes that seem to be running.

Which of these can I remove safely? Is there a guide for removing junk? I would really like to have this machine boot more quickly, and I don't want to worry about some strange process jumping in and grabbing memory in the middle of a render.

Thanks for the advice,

Milt Lee

Hey glen, Dolby Labs have changed alot of the info they carry online, and only allow licensed producers access to their tech files, so drop me a line and ill send afew tech sheets your way.

basically what your doing with ac3 is producing 6 mp3 TYPE files (theyre not actual mp3's as its not using the mp codec, its using an AC3 codec.

with dialogue normalisation, its refering to a roundabout level of gain which wont exceed X db.
I personally use -30db as i sometimes deliberatly have to blow out peaks due to fluctuating levels. The Normalisation as well as the Dynamic range usually brings this down later, but im also using a Sonic Foundry clipped peak restoration filter on all audio, so the clipping is non existant within the finished ac3. its just a different way of doing things, as i know what to expect and i know how high i can push it without killing it.

This is useful for EX mixdowns, or MixUps to 6.1 and 7.1

EX essentailly allows for the clean downmixing (through metadata) of 6 channels into 2, or up to 6 and 7, where 5.1 remains untouched depending on the Decoder. this is where the normalisation and sourroud channel configuration db comes into play.
I usually leave these untouched and allow for the EX stream to be active.

WIth the Dynamic range, setting which Ed has mentioned, i persoanlly prefer to use a "film light" compression as opposed to off. This allows a nice clean level of audio thoughout all channels and brings down those clips i was refering to earlier. it also allows for a cleaner mixdown when using DD EX.

There are many ways to produce a good sounding ac3 file, the most difficult thing about it though is making sure u maintain a good constant level of volume throughout and that each channel is clean.

Also i find that if u set your actual voice channels/tracks to film (in the panner) instead of standard it gives u a tighter environment and doesnt carry that strange hollow spread that u may hear depending on the system youre using... in here u can also kill off the rear speakers and allow some bleedthrough into the F LR channels while the C is dominant force. It just gives the voices that much more weight within the mix.

like i said, there are heaps of ways to get a good mix, but for weddings (which is what i assume your doing this for) its probably the best combo i have found. It took a while and alot of trial and error, but again it really depends on the raw recording...

It might be easier if i just get some screen grabs of each panel and email those to you with my settings.

Greetings, all. My first NLE experience was with Windows MovieMaker, the software bundled with Windows XP. In MM, I could trim --that is, shorten -- a clip on the timeline by positioning the cursor on the clip's edge, then clicking and dragging to shorten the clip.

I can do this in Vegas Movie Studio (VMS).

But: when I did this in MM, all subsequent clips rippled -- that is, snugged up-- so that no blank space remained on the timeline.

Is there a way to make this happen with VMS? I understand how to trim a clip and then select the resulting timeline hole/blank space and then engage Ripple Edit and hit delete.

But is there a way to make the thing ripple after a trim automatically?

Thanks.

I have one for Vegas from Worldtech Devices.

http://www.worldtechdevices.com/vegas.html

Mine is actually an older version. Good key response. Has keys with the shortcuts painted(?)and not decals. I got the keyboard with a Shuttle Xpress at half the cost of the EZ Keyboard. I was willing to pay the money, but got to thinking how I would use it with the jog/shuttle located where it is on the EZ Keyboard. I prefer to use my left hand on the jog wheel and right hand to either mouse or hit keyboard shortcuts. I guess if you prefer to use your left hand to jog or hit keyboard shortcuts leaving your right hand assigned to the mouse then the EZ Keyboard would be better for you. Love the jog and love the shortcuts labeled on the keys.

Look for a button on the toolbar labeled "Auto Ripple". Click it so it looks pressed in. That turns on auto ripple, the thing you want. Vegas has one and I would be surprised if VMS didn't have the same thing.

Good luck.

Thanks for the answer, Dennis. But actually, I don't think VMS does have this option. No auto ripple button that I can see, and no matches with the search function in Help.

Anyone else with any ideas, I'd love to hear 'em. This is quite a flaw in a program that in every other way seems to have dear old MM beat!
