Seeking Production Assistants for short video shoot today.

You'd need to be on set (call time) at 3pm today (location to be disclosed to you via email). NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY.

You'll be working with an experienced Director who's cordial yet stern; spontaneous and eclectic yet focused.
This is a "FEARO" (For Experience And Reel Only) gig, pronounced Pharaoh.

Josh, references for PAs is one thing. If you're producer/shooter/editor though you're giving them info so they can steal your client. They're not looking for crew, they're looking for a producer and asking for your client contact list!!!! I consider that a MUCH GREATER SIN than the price.

I've done spots in $1000-$1500 range. $500-$750 a day for one or two days including shoot (1/3" 3 chip miniDV) and edit, no crew, no paid on camera talent and no revisions. Quick cable spots.

It is, of course, much more irksome because it's in my area, and I am therefore somewhat tempted to contact them. But fear not, I won't.

Josh Bass March 27th, 2006 09:01 AM

Thanks for the reference tip. I'd never thought about it before, honestly (damn type B personality).

The 5-700 feels a little low for all that, especially considering the meetings and all that crap (on the ad, not your personal experience). Was that in a smaller market? I'm still on Houston currency, here.

James Emory March 27th, 2006 10:18 AM

Craig is right, those folks are on crack. That list of requirements is too exhaustive if for no other reason, cheapness. They're never going to find anyone that does a great job to work under those terms and conditions. They didn't seem to ask for specific contact info but just for references. I agree to never release info about your clients contact info though. Josh, see if you can find out how much they are willing to pay.

James Emory March 27th, 2006 10:25 AM

Entry Level Shooter/Editor

These folks need to look in the dictionary to refresh their memory of what the definition of entry level is!

"Seeking shooter/editor for 30-40 hours week. The more skills you have, the more hours available. Proficient on FCP/Premier editing software, proficient on After Effects, Photo Shop, DVD authoring, Sound Forge. Please send resume and cover letter."

Josh Bass March 27th, 2006 01:21 PM

Oy. . .you want me to FOR REAL contact them? Argghghghgh. Maybe. If one gives a reference, what good is it without contact info? Isn't that the point of the reference?

Craig Seeman March 27th, 2006 10:45 PM

Hi Josh,

Market is actually NYC but for $1000-$1500 they get NO meeting and NO script and NO light kit (and no assistant at all) . . . well they write the script and email it to me and I give 'em a price. Basically if I can do it by myself taking public transportation . . . if I need a car the price goes UP.

Example: A person opens a personal fitness club. I shoot the rooms and some folks working out with releases and throw it together with a provided logo. That's a range of $62.50/hr to $93.75/hr for 16 hours work. Low, but these are what I call "one day wonders." Would you believe that over half the businesses that inquire find this rate TOO HIGH!

BTW I've been undersold by people doing this as low as $25-$37.50/hr thanks to the "craigslist" mentality.

Josh Bass March 27th, 2006 11:30 PM

Yeah. It happens.

I've had a very nice day today. I'm reviewing my summer schedule and I've decided I need to make some movies. SO since I'm feeling more like working on some movies rather than handling production I'm going to hold a quasi script contest. I will make my equipment available to two productions this summer for 4-5 days each for free. I have full light kit (Arri & Kinoflo), an HVX200, skateboard dolly & track, full audio kit, and even some props and costumes. (My stuff total is worth about $250,000). Now the 'fine' print.

Two productions will be choosen on the basis of the script and pre-production work. Don't even tell me you want to do your feature, the page count limit is 25 pages, after all you only have 5 days.

All crew, except PAs, must be paid. Including me. However I don't care if you pay everyone $5/day you'll have to negotiate the rates with your crew members.

You MUST get production insurance. For a five day shoot its really cheap so don't flip out.

Pre-production work shall include:
Script
Realistic Shot List (storyboards would help but not required)
List of Script Locations AND 5 possible locations for each Script Location
Preliminary Props List
Preliminary Equipment List
Prelimiary Budget

Money. I'm not going to pay for you to make the film just cut out ALOT of the costs.

DEADLINE MAY 1st

If your pissed about the pay the crew thing then don't bother submitting, personally I usually make at least $300/day without my kit so think about it.
Oh and I'll take care of the dvd distribution if you like as well.

Could be an entrpeneur doing a sort of Project Greenlight. Sounded ok to me, if I were a smalltime wanna be movie writer. Some people can write decent shorts, but can't shoot them. Keep in mind what the cost of putting an equipment list can run.

Josh Bass March 31st, 2006 09:16 PM

Again, I site how his gear is stated to be worth 250k. That's just not possible. That really bothers me.

See how these Low Pay SLIME work

So they want 3 YEARS or MORE experience, with own camera a "plus" and they pay only $100-$150 a day
BUT if you go to their Rates page. You'll see that charge from $1200 a day for a 3 day shoot and and extra $650 for recommended hires (that extra is for recommended hires like you).

The Sony GL-2

I guess this would be like any other nowhere job except they don't even know who makes the GL-2.

"Grammy award winning R&B/Hip Hop producer is seeking a few cameras (2-3) for an upcomming video shoot scheduled for 4/20/06 in Macon Ga. We are working with little to no budget but may be able to provide a small immediate compensation with more once the project is moving. There will be cameo's of major artist's and producers in the video so the market value will be in place, as well as the fact that the track is a "HOT" one to begin with. Agreements will be signed outlining the project and compensation for work done.

If you are interested and have a camera at least the quality of sony's GL-2, please contact this post. Serious only need respond, if you don't plan on committing to a project like this please don't waste our time or yours by causing production problems."

Hi,

I write screenplays and fiction. I have a concept for a TV show about the paranormal, magic, occult, unexplained-along those lines. There is a cool catch that is not being done right now.

Please, serious people respond. I have limited film and video production abilities. You should be able to pick up a DV and shoot well, you should be able to edit, you should be very creative and dedicated.

I am not looking to hire a production company, thank you.
I want to write, co-direct, produce, market and edit the pilot to waiting execs in the biz.

As far as pay and budget, well those are subjects that will be discussed once I decide that your the "One".

All people, young and old with talent, expereince and dedication should apply.

I'm ready to break the damn doors down for this concept, I truly believe it's a winner. You will need to sign legal papers to be involved with this project.

Come help me and help yourself.

Please no negative, dreamers, non-mature, anger management folks.

Thanks "

K. Forman April 2nd, 2006 07:22 AM

Oh. it's been done before. Too many shows have used the paranormal as a theme. BUT... I have an idea that hasn't been used in combination with the paranormal. It's just not P.C.

Looking for a dp with OWN Sony HDW-F900/3 CineAlta for a feature project to be shot guerilla style this summer starting in June. Must have experience with narrative dramatic material and a reel demonstrating that, also should have checkable references and credits.

This is NOT PAYING POSITION. The project is conceived and carried out by a group of producers and filmmakers whose previous work played and won prizes in major festival circuits (Sundance and all that chime...) and has been picked up for distribution, so you wouldn't be dealing with a bunch of amateurs. straight out of film school. We can offer a differed payment contract, however, for all intent and purposes this IS NOT A MONEY MAKING PROJECT. The script is excellent and name talent actors will be involved in the project, so it could turn out a great opportunity for the right candidate.

Please e-mail back with resumes and links to the online demo reels. If you don't have an online demo reel we will email you back with an address to send your reel if we are interested in you.

Also if you have an HDV camera and don't have CineAlta (or VariCam), please, don't waste your time, we have our own HDV cameras and not looking for more. Good luck to all the applicants and thank you.
