I saw your thead a few weeks ago. There you would
like to sell it for 750 USD.

Thanks for the response. Thats over my budget though, sorry. Its also only about £400 cheaper than I can buy new in the UK (including the batteries) and there's always the chance of being stung for import tax (although I'm checking to see if this applies to secondhand goods...).

Just to let everyone know, doing business with Don is GREAT, so if you're interested in any of the other stuff he's got listed for sale here, don't hesitate! (Except his MA-100--I bought that, too :)

I love my *new* monitor, Don!!! Thanks again.

Well, Lots of looks but no offers so here's what I'm going to do.
This same Turn-Key system sells for $10K at B&H without the (2) 19" computer monitors. Here's my final price for the whole system posted above.
$7500
This is my last post before taking this to eBay (as much as I hate the idea). I really want this system to find a good home. As I said above, if you're only interested in the Reality Hardware and Velocity Software without the computer, I'm willing to make a deal.

Manfrotto (Bogen) #3251 Tripod (legs): A favorite professional tripod for medium format cameras up to 5 X 4", the 3251 is one of the most exciting tripods in the whole Manfrotto line. Features patented automatic simultaneous or individual leg release system that permits the legs to be extended, the tripod levelled (spirit level included) and locked in seconds without the need for individual leg adjustment. Rubber feet with retractable spiked feet are standard. This tripod is capable of extremely low camera position with the platform at only 17", yet has the ability to go up and stand over 7 feet!

Maximum height: 85.5"
Minimum height: 17.4"
Closed length: 37.1"
Maximum load capacity: 26.5 lbs
Weight: 13.6 lbs
List price: $396.00

Chris Hurd’s quote in reference to the Bogen 3251 legs: “I'm using the Bogen 3251 sticks. This is the "automatic" tripod with a black finish. Tom Mckay has the silver version of this, and that's where I first saw it. A little on the heavy side, but the ability to extend all three legs with the push of a lever is quite choice. It's also great for breakdown... just push a lever and collapse the pod... easy, fast.”

Manfrotto (Bogen) #3130 Quick Release Micro Fluid Head: A lightweight fluid head with adjustable pan bar and quick-release camera plate with secondary security. Ideal for cameras up to 8.9 lbs in weight. The head has smooth fluid movements, pan and tilt locks. The adjustable pan bar can be positioned either on the left or right side.

Maximum Capacity: 8.9 lbs
List price: $103.00

I have a 953 that I got right after the New Year that I would like to sell. This camera has NEVER BEEN USED! I charged the battery once, goofed around with it a bit, then put it in a case. I have 6 Fuji tapes, all the literature, a Manfrotto quick disconnect, and the charger. The only thing missing is the box, which got thrown out when I moved last month by mistake. The reason I am selling it is because I have never used it and it is just too much money for a college student to have tied up.

I would like to sell this for $900 plus shipping (the method of your choice). You can email me at jmemt1975@yahoo.com. Thanks!

Hello all!! I rarely post at these boards but troll all the time. I have gotten a lot of good info and tips on equipment as well as advice on starting my own small video deposition business here, so needless to say this is a great site!!

Just to let you know, I became a certified legal video specialist (through the AGCV) and I have used the legal video business as part time work to pay the bills over the past year... it is truly a great second income! Fortunately, I received a response from Universal Television about a career opportunity in New York and I start in June. I am ecstatic about it... but... now must sell my equipment.

I decided to let you guys have first dibs before heading to Ebay because I know some of you are interested in the same business. I specialized only in video depositions and purchased my specific lot of equipment to handle every kind of deposition I shot. So in case you purchase all or some of my things, you know what you can get by on when you start out... plus I would be happy to give advice to anyone aiming for this type of business venture (No, you dont have to buy anything for my advice... thats free!)

For legitimacy concerns, please feel free to check out my feedback history under the username "joecavalier" on Ebay... I have 60 transaction responses with 100% positive feedback. I am currently located in Charlottesville VA and will be happy to meet you (within a reasonable distance ) to help you save on shipping costs.

All the equipment is in excellent condition. I am very carefully with any electronics that I own... okay... obsessive compulsive (but arent we all when it comes to protecting our investment??). All the items listed were used in corporate settings and stored in my home office, so nothing was ever exposed to harsh environments.

Some stuff I bought new, some off of Ebay and some from a studio I used to work at in DC, this is indicated after the price in paranthesis, but I vouch for everything and will fully explain each item to you in detail... I can even send pics if you wish. If an item is listed as "bought new", it means that I purchased it new and used it probably 10 times and it should be considered... well... NEW! If interested in everything, I will sell the whole lot for $3,500. You can reach me via email at jrice70@cs.com, we can discuss anything and everything by phone once you respond. FYI, I will be out of town until June 2nd so will not be able to ship equipment until the 3rd or 4th. Payment options include paypal and money orders. If you would like to send a check I will need to wait for it to clear.

Okay, enough babbling... here ya go... THANKS AND GOOD LUCK!!

Not all directly video related:

- NEC LCD1765 17" LCD Flatscreen monitor. Native res (1280x1024). Still have box and all packing parts (styrafome, etc)
Been used under a month- perfect condition both cosmetically and mechanically.

- Pinnacle DV500 real-time capture card w/ Premiere 6.0

- Lot of unopened Panasonic MQ mini DV tapes (have to check the exact amount...roughly around 10 or so) Sold my DVX100 and have been using different tapstock for my PD-170.

- Sony CD Architect 5.0 (had a buyer, but never recieved the check- tried communicating w/ him...recieved no response)

- Canon S800 6-color photo printer (perfect condition- rarely used, always stored with dust cover- cosmetically and mechanically perfect)

If your interested in one or more of these items please contact me with an offer. No reasonable offers will be denied. Thanks.

Joe, not sure what you read, but I can tell you that there are many thrilled owners of Steadicam JR's, Glidecams etc. out there. It really depends on what you are looking to do with the gear and expect from it.

If you want to be able to make smooth tracking shots, that's the way to go. It will take a certain amount of practice to get the best results, but as you realized this is true of handheld as well. At the end of the day you will want to learn and practice both skills and be able to choose between them for a given shot.

Tripods are used for a third application entirely; working the camera from a fixed position. Stabilizers are too tiring to use in this fashion, and handheld doesn't look the same.

If you would care to share some of the things you read, I'd be happy to give you my opinion.

Joe Cirino

Heres one of 3 forums I read.

http://www.dmnforums.com/cgi-bin/disppost.cgi?forum=sonic-foundry_vegas&filename=040214204020.htm

Many points which I was not aware of came up in this one. I guess for the money spent, its not a necessity as of now. I would much rather buy a good light for my unit and a stable tripod.

What do you recomend in terms of tripods? I want to keep it inexpensive but quality.

Thanks Charles ;-)

Charles Papert
May 27th, 2004, 02:29 PM
Joe, buying the best tripod you can afford is a solid, long-term choice and you are right to prioritize that over a stabilizer.

As an FYI to readers of this thread who might look into that forum that Joe linked, some of my thoughts:

Post 2--While a Steadytracker can perform simple walking shots, it won't have the subtlety of a gimballed system (panning/tilting).

Post 4--Endless balancing--arguable, it's part of the deal.

One-handed operation for JR--only under certain circumstances. Best results are when operating with two hands.

Issues with extra weight: agreed, no camera over 4-5 lbs belongs on a handheld stabilizer.

Post 6--there is no comparison between shooting off a tripod and shooting off a stabilizer. One is for non-moving shots, the other is for moving shots. One is not a substitute for the other.

Post 8--learning great handheld technique is a wonderful art and everyone who shoots should practice it to a certain degree. However, even the best shooters in the world cannot deliver the same level of results that a stabilizer can when it comes to truly fluid movement, it's not how the human body works.

Post 9--I doubt that a gimballed stabilizer could be built for $20. I'm guessing they built something along the lines of a Steadytracker, aka a weighted stick. See Post 2 comments.

Regarding wearable rigs, taking an expensive workshop is a good choice if you want to become a great operator and can afford it. But for the lower end wearable rigs (under $5K, say) it's not likely to be a logical choice, and the solution is lots of practice.

Post 10--apparently lots of folks have a hard time with the balance. It isn't all that intuitive and can be frustrating, but it CAN and is possible and many users of these type of rigs have been working with them for years with fine results.

Post 11--True to an extent. It is certainly easier to work with the types of equipment mentioned hear. But if you are dead-set on getting Steadicam shots, you need to invest the time and patience. It's not a plug and play technology.

That's really the moral of the story: it don't come easy. You need to commit the time and be prepared for the learning curve and the physicality involved. It sounds like most of those posters wanted it to magically fly through the air by itself ten minutes after taking it out of the box, and it doesn't. However, it's all too easy to get frustrated and blame it on the equipment, which is not really the case. The Steadicam JR has been around for something like 13 years and there are many, many satisfied users. I myself bought one when it first came out and paid it off within a month on a couple of Hi-8 jobs, and the client loved the results. Now since I have a Steadicam background, it was easier for me to transfer my operating knowledge but I still had to learn the particulars of the system. But there is one shot that I did on an industrial back then that amazed me, because I felt the results were every bit as good as I could get on my big rig.

Good luck with your decisions, all!

Joe Cirino

Thank you so much for your time in answering these tough questions. I may in the future purchase one after all. It is always the case that with good practice, one can master.
